Previews: Dale “Vn” Marshall – “Room 101″

In George Orwell’s novel “1984,” Room 101 was the torture chamber in which citizens were subjected to direct peril from their own worst fears, anxieties and phobias. The worlds of fine art and graffiti merge within Dale Marshall’s (streets) work and have been used as his own Room 101 for a more positive form of therapy. The artist, who also goes by the names Vn and Vermin, is open about his history of mental health issues. The duality of the artist and the exhibition echoes Marshall’s […]

Subliminal Projects was the host venue for a joint event on Thursday, September 16th: the Los Angeles launch and signing for the book Beyond the Street, followed by the opening reception for Shepard Fairey’s Printed Matters exhibition (covered). A line began to form outside the gallery at 4 p.m., with the proper madness commencing three hours later when the doors opened. Showing: Matthew Feyld “Untitled 1 & 2” at Krets and Neon, Sweden

AM recently brought you a glimpse of Matthew Feyld’s installation coming together at his two concurrent solo shows in Sweden at Krets and Neon.  It was following his period of residency during August and the beginning of this month at the galleries.  Both shows have since opened, and as we suggested may happen, Feyld was let loose to assemble a large freestanding installation at Neon. Consisting of large scale wooden cut outs, the installation work is some of the largest the Saskatoon, Canada-based artist has […]

Streets: Anthony Lister in London

Directly following the opening of his installation at NYC’s Standard Hotel, Australian artist Anthony Lister (interviewed) hauled across the pond to visit London for a few days. AM contributor Patrick Nguyen caught up with him on Friday for a chat and to take some photographs as Lister spray painted two shutters and the adjoining pillar at Pictures On Walls on Commercial Street. Does this mean a POW / Lister edition is on the cards? We’ll have to wait and see… Painting began shortly after 4:30 […]

Installation: Filthy Luker in Quito, Equador

You may have seen our recent coverage of D*Face’s outdoor activities in Quito, Equador as part of the ‘9no Festival de Arte en la Calle’, and as a natural follow-up, AM now takes a look at some images that UK Urban Interventionist Filthy Luker sent us from Quito. Luker’s huge inflatable sculptures are often seen as culture jamming on a grand scale, and some of these familiar forms look stunning set against the South American backdrop. Imagine the public buildings around the town square being […]

Streets: Nick Walker’s “Cardinal Sinister” in London

It looks like Bristol stencilist Nick Walker (interviewed) was up at the crack of dawn this morning to hit up a prominent spot in London outside the Royal College of Art / Royal Albert Hall with this piece entitled “Cardinal Sinister”. Walker is bang on topic with his rendition of Pope Benedict XVI stoking a white cat à la Bond villain Blofeld, who’s arrival in the apparently “third world” UK this week has sparked tension in some and indifference in others. Britain may largely be […]

We like catchy titles, and you don’t get much more catchy than the mouthful we named this contest. Well, we received more than 50 entries for the contest, and each delighted us with the range of artistic talent shown by the entrants. To recap, the rules were […]
