Preview: Chloe Early – “Rainbow Ruins” @ Corey Helford Gallery

This Saturday night (November 10th) at the Corey Helford Gallery, the new paintings collectively entitled Rainbow Ruins will be on display for the first time. Brought across the pond by the UK-based Chloe Early, the new work highlight the contrasts between the technological age and the demands the natural world. Within the imagery, you will see her characters and the modern world getting overwhelmed by the overgrowth of the surrounding environment as nature attempts to retake what was originally its domain. Rounding out the show will also be […]

Preview: Kelsey Brookes – “Serotonin; Happiness and Spiritual States” @ Quint Contemporary Art

This Saturday night, November 10th, Kelsey Brookes will be putting on display some paintings he has been working on for a while now that are based loosely on the structures of neurotransmitters and their influence on our mental state. As a former microbiologist, it is only natural for science and art to converge in Brookes’ new body of work entitled Serotonin; Happiness and Spiritual States. Publisher Mark Murphy stopped and snapped some shots (seen in this article as well as over here & here), but head […]

Streets: World Roundup (Oct 29 – Nov 4)

This week’s Streets: World Roundup feature is headlined by a new mural (photo by Lois Stavsky) in New York City by Ron English, who worked overtime to finish it before Hurricane Sandy hit. The piece (on Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester in New York’s Little Italy) depicting his Temper Tot character is a English’s first mural in Manhattan in about 25 years as part of The New York Comedy Festival and Vandalog’s series of indoor and outdoor installations collectively titled The Art of Comedy. If you are interested, you can join their The […]

Studio Visits: Mike Sutfin – “Creeping Nomadic” @ Grass Hut

The other weekend, AM swung by Oakland-based painter/illustrator Mike Sutfin’s studio as he was putting the final touches to his Creeping Nomadic show at Grass Hut in Portland that runs til November 30th. The show features a series of small oil paintings on board (none of which are digitally colored!), ink illustrations, t-shirts, and hand-painted versions of his toy, Battle Man and Battle Rat (which were painted by him and other artists). The gallery already has already posted the artwork online, which you can check […]

Studio Visits: AJ Fosik

AJ Fosik’s sculptural artworks almost need no introduction. In a world where it is increasingly difficult to have a true individual voice as an artist, Fosik’s work has an original aesthetic honed over the years from his roots in graffiti, street art and two-dimensional drawing. AJ decided that his imagery would be better represented in three dimensions around seven years ago, and has continued to immerse himself in the medium of handcrafted woodwork for his iconography inspired art ever since. Using modern woodworking techniques (he doesn’t consider himself […]

David Choe Reddit Takeover

For those who have been following David Choe (featured) on various social media related accounts (like Instagram, Youtube, Facebook), you’ll have heard about his Reddit takeover already. For our readers out there who don’t know what Reddit is (like most of us at AM pre-Choe takeover), it’s a social news website where the users submit content in the form of either a link or a text which other users can then vote it up or down, thereby ranking the post and determining its position on the site’s pages and […]

Last night, the CHG Circa Gallery in Culver City held the opening for Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed) solo show featuring her paintings inspired by Día de los Muertos. Entitled appropriately Catrina, after the beautiful lady of the dead, the new body of work encompassed a selection of portraiture incorporating much of the imagery and iconography of the holiday. Showing: “Bad Dads” Wes Anderson Tribute Show @ Spoke Art

Marking the third time (also see 2010) they have had a group show tribute to director Wes Anderson, Spoke Art in San Francisco opened their doors last week to fans of art and film buffs alike. Coinciding annually with Halloween, the opening reception slash costume party featured references to Mr. Anderson’s cult movies so we are sure Bill Murray-inspired pieces and costumes were a hit. It’s on through November 24th so stop by if you have a chance. Photo credit: Art (gallery) & People (Colin M. […]

Openings: KAWS – “Imaginary Friends” @ Galerie Perrotin

Officially opening their doors just hours ago, Galerie Perrotin in Paris unveiled all new works from the NY-based KAWS in his highly anticipated solo Imaginary Friends. Highlights of the show included multiples of his running chum canvases (also replicated as showcards making a nice souvenir) as well as creatively-shaped irregular piece that appeared to be mirrored in a more conventional painting right next to it – leading to an interesting side by side comparison. Also making the trip and greeting fans in the courtyard was the impressive COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) sculpture […]
