The weeks of setup for the POW WOW ’11 in Honolulu culminated in blowout showcase bringing together talent from different parts of the world. People all over Hawaii came to take part in the celebration where performance, photography, graffiti, and fine art intersected. After taking a brilliant turn as the director of the Simpsons’ opening sequence, Banksy returns as a reference in the last episode (22×14) as a timely tag backstage as America’s favorite animated family makes an appearance at the Oscars. Streets: JR (Los Angeles) Part II

As we reported earlier, French street activist and photographer JR is continuing his assault on the walls of LA since starting with a mural in Venice last week. LA weekly is following his progress in bringing his “The Wrinkles of the City” to Socal on their website (map) and this is the latest piece at Barracuda in Melrose. This newest project will lead in nicely to the TED Prize award show on March 2 (live streaming) where he will reveal his “wish.” Discuss JR here.

Looks like Retna’s not the only one into painting aircraft. Phlegm recently enhanced this old Soviet fighter jet, a Sukhoi Su-17 with some of his signature imagery. It looks like street photographer JR is back in Southern California after Eurotrash took over the Lazarides pop-up gallery last July. If you remember, as an adjunct for that show, he worked on a sweet collaboration with Vhils in downtown LA. One of our favourite things we’ve seen on the streets over the last few months have been Kid Acne’s Art Fags. Acne has frequently brightened the day with his playful creations, but this huge street art in-joke makes us smile everytime we come across one.
