Video: JR x Patrice – Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)

German/Sierra Leonean reggae singer Patrice recently released a music video featuring an iconic speaker sculpture by JR (examples here and here). Utilzing some stop motion animation, “Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)”, a cover of a song by Nina Simone, features the wheatpasted set of speakers in different configurations throughout the video. Look for more from the French street photographer later this year in London, Shanghai, and Miami but for now, enjoy this video. Discuss JR here.

Openings: M-City & Boogie @ Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery recently opened two shows at their Culver City gallery and although the artists use different mediums and subject matter, their work is both deeply rooted in the streets. M-City’s work was both mechanical in appearance and in physical attributes. It included works that included levers and pulleys. The machine-like works contained images of M-City’s futuristic black and white industrial factories and buildings that contain no signs of human life. Last Tuesday night, Paul Kasmin Gallery hosted the opening for David La Chapelle’s latest body of work “American Jesus.” We’re not sure if it’s the gallery or David’s following, but the space was jam-packed with onlookers gawking at David’s elaborate digitally rendered photos. Robert Longo x Bottega Veneta

In the ’80s, it was Robert Longo who originated the often-imitated (Apple iPod ads, anyone?) style of twisting, turning, and contorting action shots in his series Men in the Cities. Recently, Bottega Veneta came correct by hiring the artist to work on their ad campaign, instead of copying him. Longo’s photographs will appear in the Fall-Winter 2010/2011 marketing materials for the high-fashion label, continuing the recent trend of partnerships (Ryan McGinley, Aakash Nihalani, Eine, etc.) between artists and brands. The Jeffrey Deitch era at MOCA has officially begun with his first show as director of the esteemed institution – Dennis Hopper’s Double Standard. This Saturday, July 10, Carmichael Gallery in Culver City opens a show of photographs by international photographer and Brooklyn resident Boogie. LACMA Acquires Gursky Ocean Photographs

According to the New York Times, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has acquired four Andreas Gursky photographs from the artist’s Gagosian Gallery exhibition, which we covered here. It is unknown how much it paid, but the photographs, based on existing satellite imagery, carried the asking price of $680,000 apiece. LACMA received the funds from an anonymous source and from Steven F. Roth, executive vice president of the World Oil Corporation.
