Upcoming: Dan Colen – “Viscera” @ Venus Over Los Angeles

This Saturday night (May 2nd), the Upper East Side NY gallery run by Adam Lindemann will be opening a location on the West Coast called Venus Over Los Angeles. The debut show will feature three new series of work from the New York-based Dan Colen: Canopics – sculptures cast from the negative space formed by roadside guardrails mangled by car accidents, Rainbow Paintings – inspired by Disney’s Fantasia, decontextualized backdrops minus the animated characters, and Psychics (Interstellar Medium) – a sound piece of recorded psychic readings with the original […]

Upcoming: KAWS – “CLEAN SLATE” @ Shanghai Time Square

On May 15th, a colossal sculptural work from KAWS will be unveiled at Piazza of Shanghai Times Square. This is not the first time the American artist has put on display something like this for his Chinese fans as you may remember the same sculpture from last year in Hong Kong (covered). With the seven meter tall version of his iconic Companion figure holding two smaller characters in his arms standing guard, visitors and residents of the largest city in China will certainly get a good […]

Upcoming: ArtZuid 2015

Foundation ArtZuid is currently finishing organizing 2015 edition of their International Sculpture Route in Amsterdam. ArtZuid is an open air sculpture biennial with this year’s route consisting of about 73 monumental outdoor sculptures placed through the Berlage’s Art Deco district in Amsterdam South, just outside the city center. This concept doesn’t only invite people to enjoy art objects in public space by walking or cycling the route, but also, it gives a chance to discover another area of Dutch capital. The fourth edition of the event will take […]

Showing: Brad Downey – ‘Souvenirs’ @ Ruttkowski;68

Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne, Germany recently opened a new solo by American artist Brad Downey. Titled Souvenirs, the show features short videos and a series of everyday objects and utilitarian materials juxtapozed in a new context creating a novel meaning. The work raises issues about everything from identity (with his flags drawings), privacy, to self destruction. His series of works with keys touchbase on the notion of access and security. With his techniques of détournement and re-contextualization, Downey reinterprets banal objects to create revelatory artworks. These act as ‘souvenirs‘ as […]

Previews: Takashi Murakami @ Blum & Poe Popup Gallery (Ibiza)

This June, Blum & Poe will open a pop up gallery on Ibiza, showing exclusive new works by Takashi Murakami. The Japanese artist recently shared these in-progress photos showing his studio staff at Miyoshi Factory preparing the works. Along with new large paintings, a few sculptures will be exhibited, including one that will be placed at the entrance of a newly constructed casino on the island. Since the deadline for this project was quite short, the team had to find a faster production solution for this piece. The answer […]

Openings: Ben Turnbull – “Smells Like Teens Spirit” & Ramon Maiden – “Turbofaith, Ladies of the Night and Dandy Delinquents” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace is currently presenting a duo show with British artist Ben Turnbull and Spanish illustrative artist Ramon Maiden through May 15th. A self taught artist with a U.S. obsession, Turnbull learned his skill working with craftsmen and artisans. Back in 2006, the various firearms he produced encased in facsimiles of red fire alarm boxes bearing ‘In Emergency Break Glass’ were featured at the Banksy Santa’s Ghetto. Continuing his series American History X, the exhibition Smells Like Teens Spirit focuses on the lone teen shooter phenomenon that has occurred in the US […]

Openings: Patrick Martinez – “FORBIDDEN FRUIT” @ New Image Art

Last week at New Image Art in Los Angeles, the versatile Patrick Martinez unveiled new mixed media works with a show entitled FORBIDDEN FRUIT. The fresh work combines his signature neon light technique with sculpture & painting, taking inspiration from things like hip hop and minority culture. Examples include guns mingling and appearing with common place items like fruits highlighted by neon lights, or imagery products are placed on the wall like strange hybrids – all giving insight into Martinez’s artistic vision. Dabs Myla x MTV Movie Awards

For those who missed the MTV Movie Awards last weekend, Dabs Myla has sent us some images from the event. The Australian husband and wife duo took it to another level with the some of the branding of the show as well as creating on site installations, murals, and sculptural elements much like KAWS did for the VMA’s back in 2013 (covered). The set design was inspired by the artists’ travels and the cities they have visited, but the recreated city was meant to bring up memories of any major American […]

Basel Week HK ’15: Art Basel Hong Kong – (Part II)

One of the great things about Art Basel Hong Kong is the fact that galleries and artists alike make moves in consideration of the Asian markets they are showcasing in. Basel Week HK ’15: Art Basel Hong Kong – (Part I)

The Basel Art Fair circuit is pretty clear cut when it comes to scheduling for its mainstay fairs around the world. Art Basel takes Europe in June, Art Basel Miami takes hold of North America in December and Asia circles the calendar in May for the art world to visit Art Basel Hong Kong. But this year, the folks in charge of Art Basel shook things up and moved the fair to March. AM recently visited Hong Kong to catch the event in Hong Kong at […]
