Upcoming: “Takashi in Superflat Wonderland” @ Plateau, Samsung Museum of Art

Today in South Korea, Takashi Murakami opened a new exhibition at Plateau, Samsung Museum of Art featuring over 40 of his artworks. Takashi in Superflat Wonderland will include recent works, but is also a retrospective, and puts the core “Superflat” philosophy behind his art on display. Openings: “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

Over the weekend, AM stopped by the Orange County Musuem of Art to take a look at the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial that just opened, in particular Mark Dean Veca’s (interviewed) installation. Along with some paintings he submitted, the Los Angeles-based artist also painted a room with his signature patterns and added some interesting adornments. Openings: A New Sculpturalism @ MOCA Geffen

Opening last week at MOCA’s Geffen location was A New Sculpturalism, a show that examines the work of thirty-eight major and emerging practices in contemporary Los Angeles architecture of the past twenty-five years. Showing: Danh Vō – “Go Mo Ni Ma Da” @ The Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris

Videos: RETNA for MOCAtv

MOCAtv recently released a new video featuring the Los Angeles-based RETNA (featured) spanning several projects put together in conjunction with the museum. The footage includes an interview with the graffiti artist as he talked about his two recent murals, The Falcon Before and After – 2013 and Para Mi Gente, Los Pintores de Nuestra Alma, painted at the Grand Ave Location for their 2013 Gala. Upcoming: Mark Dean Veca for “California-Pacific Triennial” @ OCMA

At the end of the month (June 30th), the Orange County Musuem of Art will be opening their 2013 California-Pacific Triennial. This survey of contemporary art draws from a cross-section of countries from throughout the Pacific Rim and will include a diverse list of artists this year including the locally-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed). Next month at the Monterey Museum of Art in Central California, Andrew Schoultz will be presenting an exhibition entitled In Process: Andrew Schoultz. Aiko & Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Edo Pop” @ Japan Society

New York’s Japan Society recently hosted an exhibition looking at the graphic impact of Japanese prints on art in the contemporary age. Entitled Edo Pop, this showcase playfully juxtaposed traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints from such masters as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige with current New York contemporary artists, such as Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) and Aiko. Showing: Anish Kapoor – “Sympathy for a Beloved Sun” @ Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin)

Anish Kapoor’s first major exhibition in Berlin, Sympathy for a Beloved Sun, has just opened at Martin-Gropius-Bau, curated by Berliner Festspiele. Set in a grand neoclassical style museum, the show is comprised of 70 different abstract poetic works spanning from 1982 to present.
