This year’s hottest pick for your bookshelf “Beyond the Street: The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art” completes its run of the trinity of art capitals this month with the Los Angeles book launch and signing to be held at Subliminal Projects on Thursday 16th September between 7 & 8 pm. AM has been along to the previous launch events in London and New York, and both events have been fun affairs, with plenty of the books contributors in attendance to chat with art lovers […]

Openings: Matt Small – “That I May See” @ Black Rat Projects

An inspirational show from Matt Small (interviewed) opened last night at Black Rat Projects in London. Not only was the artwork stunning, like the showstopper seen above, the subjects of Matt’s paintings were students from a project he participated in earlier this year where he conducted workshops in Zambia (covered). “That I May See” featured portraits using the the UK artist’s unique vibrant and colorful swirl technique with 40% of the proceeds going to the Robert Shitima School from the aforementioned Zambia project. The highly […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Nobody’s Fool” Retrospective @ Asia Society

Yesterday, AM attended the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s epic retrospective at New York’s Asia Society. With anticipation building since attending his “Open Studio” session a few weeks prior, we didn’t know what more to expect from Nara and YNG/graf aside from the artwork being created by the artist and the cool construction of the “Home” installation. After checking out opening night though, it’s pretty obvious the expansive & comprehensive retrospective put together by curators Miwako Tezuka & Melissa Chiu will delight fans old and new. […]

Openings: Brendan Monroe & Evah Fan – “Figments” & “Come What May” @ Galerie L.J.

Last Saturday in Paris, a special show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Evah Fan opened at Galerie L.J. The American duo each brought separate bodies of work entitled “Figments” and “Come What May” respectively and both included paintings as well as sculptural works. As Brendan mentioned in our preview for his show, he has included some painted landscapes for the characters and faces that reappear in his work and we think these turned out incredibly well. When looking at these organic mountains and plains, the […]

Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Siren” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Friday, Sarah Joncas (interviewed) trekked down all the way from Ontario, Canada to attend the opening of her solo show at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Her newest body of work, “Siren”, is inspired by the seduction and romance of music and includes a large-scale mural, the timelapse of which we showed you last week. More opening night images after the jump…

Openings: Bäst – “Botulism” @ Lazarides Gallery

Lazarides’ latest exhibition at their Rathbone Place space opened on the 20th of August and showcased a solo exhibition by legendary Brooklyn artist Bäst. On show are a series of large scale works on canvas, paper and wood, along with several sculptural pieces, which sees the artist revisit and expand upon themes and styles he has been experimenting with for many years. The bold red and blue Key Foods posters once used as backdrops are here recreated as thick, textured acrylic and, on the canvas […]

Openings: Kevin Tong – “Mechanical Dreams” @ Phonebooth Gallery

Last weekend saw the debut of Long Beach’s Phonebooth Gallery. A longtime internet presence with a devout following, PBG appears to have made the next step in their growth with a new brick and mortar space. For their inaugural show, Garry Booth brought on Kevin Tong, one of the new breed of designer/print makers that we’ve had our eye on for a while… Following the recent sneak peek of Tong’s latest on Hi-Fructose, AM is proud to present some exclusive opening night photos. Check out […]

Openings: Zosen – “System Collapse” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace’s latest exhibition opened last week and featured a solo exhibition by Zosen. “System Collapse” is the Barcelona based Argentinian artist’s first solo exhibit in the UK for which he presented a series of colorful character based canvases alongside some text based work, a video installation and some hand knitted pieces including a couple of these fun looking day-glo balaclavas. We’d love to see someone wearing one of these around town – could be essential winter-wear for the East London hipster brigade! AM’s favourite piece […]

Openings: Jonathan LeVine Gallery – “Annual Summer Invitational”

Last week, we stopped by Jonathan LeVine Gallery to hang out and catch their “Annual Summer Invitational” (previewed). The diverse group show consisted of artists who have never officially shown with the gallery and gave attendees of the gallery a different look at some different Low Brow and Street art action. We particularly enjoyed the Judith Supine, Andrew Hem (interviewed),  and EVOL pieces that were displayed. Catch it all after the jump.

Signings: Mark Ryden – “The Snow Yak Show” @ SFMOMA

Continuing a string of quality book releases at SFMOMA (see David Choe and Further signings), Mark Ryden spent some time last week meeting and greeting his legions of fans on the occasion of the release of his new book “The Snow Yak Show” from Last Gasp Books (purchase here). Luckily for us, our friends from Hi-Fructose were on hand to document the event. More pics after the jump…
