Openings: Roa @ Factory Fresh

Talented street artist Roa continued his onslaught of recent shows (Cologne, Paris and London) with a new body of work for the Factory Fresh Gallery in New York. Reprising his signature lenticular paintings and utilizing found objects as canvas with movable parts revealing the anatomy of his animal subjects, the Belgium-based artist once again wowed the audience with ingenious constructs and on site installations. Openings: Allison Sommers – Schlareffenland @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last weekend, Allison Sommers (interviewed) opened her show “Schlareffenland” at the Thinkspace Gallery alongside Joao Ruas. Showing off her vivid imagination as well as a predilection for sausages, Allison wowed the crowd with her strikingly detailed paintings, sculptures, and sausage jello – yes, sausage jello. Os Gemeos unleashed their latest show across the Atlantic in Portugal named “Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá” (To who lives there, heaven is there). Last week, AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Sao Paulo native Joao Ruas’ show “III” at the recently christened new Thinkspace location. The young artist who replaced James Jean at the helm of the “Fables” franchise was on hand to greet guests who made it out to see his show. Openings: Roy Lichtenstein – “Still Lifes” @ Gagosian NYC (24th St.)

As one of the cornerstones of the Pop Art movement, Roy Lichtenstein left behind a legacy of phenomenal art that has influence much of the art, design, and marketing that surrounds us today. The Gagosian Gallery in NYC (555 West 24th street location) is currently showing a collection of his works entitled “Still Lifes” with works spanning from 1972 to the early 1980’s and focusing on paintings, sculptures and drawings. Openings: Charlie Isoe – “Silver Spoons and Hotel Rooms” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Extensive traveler and artist Charlie Isoe opened his show “Silver Spoons and Hotel Rooms” this weekend at the Rathbone Place location for Lazarides Gallery. He works loosely, focusing on human and anthropomorphic animals that draw attention to a side of all of us that we perhaps do not want to face. Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works” @ Tomio Koyama Gallery

Yoshitomo Nara unveiled a new series of works at Japan’s Tomio Koyama Gallery yesterday. As we mentioned earlier, Nara has been very busy honing his talents on this new medium for over a year at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. Openings: Matt Leines – “These Songs Are True” @ Guerrero Gallery

Guerrero Gallery held it down with a cool series of work from Matt Leines that showed in their space starting last week. Opening along side Alex Lukas (covered), Matt’s latest show “These Songs Are True” took us to his imagined world where cultural elements are mixed with pseudo historical references to create a society of crazy human-esqe characters. Colorful masks or faces stare back at you with geometric shapes and colors forming fascinating environments. Check it out after the jump.
