It has been four years since Chris Berens last showed solo at Roq La Rue. Nethermoor, as the show is titled, is based on Michael Ende’s book, Die Unendliche Geschichte, or as many may know it, The Neverending Story. The show opening however, wove a story all its own. While most artists were painting large murals at one location, Ernest Zacharevic contributed to POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) with several smaller interventions scattered around town, making visitors go on a real hunt for his work. Earlier this month, the newly branded KP Projects / MKG (Merry Karnowsky Gallery) opened a small solo from Nicola Verlato (featured) in their back room entitled Conquest of the West. The selection of work included a few midsize pieces featuring the Italian artist’s recognizable modern takes on the styles seen in old masterworks, some smaller paintings that continue the theme of the show in closeups, and a few studies. Probably most original and unique artist of this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) was the Minneapolis-based HotTea. Known for his yarn installations on fences, he found a very original and harmless way of expressing himself on the streets. He created this technique after getting in trouble for doing graffiti but still wanting to be able to continue bombing, but not get in trouble. Saturday night marked the triumphant return of Robert Williams to the Los Angeles art scene with his first comprehensive showing in many years. Slang Aesthetics! at the LA Municipal Art Gallery featured paintings, drawings, and sculptural works from the influential painter and and one of the co-founders of Juxtapoz Magazine, and was a testament to the locally-based artist’s talent and the significance of his career.
