Openings: “Brush Strokes” @ V1 Gallery

Last week, Copenhagen’s V1 gallery opened the stunning new show “Brush Strokes,” featuring the works of Todd James (aka REAS) and Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee). According to the V1 site, the title of the exhibition is a reference to the humorous NYC public-access TV show. What do you get when you mix Natalia Fabia’s (interviewed) “Hooker DreamEscape” imagery with Lolita fashion, Domo-kun, kaiju, geishas and other Japanese cultural phenomena? The answer is her stunning new body of work – “Fashionable Aftertaste Without End”. The “East meets West” opening party on Saturday night at Corey Helford Gallery featured a 450 pound specialty chandelier, plenty of appropriately costumed guests, and of course incredibly detailed paintings full of life, color, and Kawaii. Last Friday night, Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted “King for a Day” (previewed), a show by the Melbourne-based Meggs. We brought you a few teaser pics of Matt Haber’s “The Little Voyageurs” coming together at The Bldg in Covington, Kentucky a week or so ago, and since Matt got home to Brooklyn, he sent us some flicks of the work from the show. AM dropped in to the opening of Pure Evil’s new solo show last week at the Pure Evil Gallery, which was looking resplendent under it’s brand new gin-palace styled black and gold leaf signage. Gin & tonic was being served of course in this bastion of East London creativity, and Charley’s large scale “Strange Girls” decorated the space. AM recently brought you details of the ProjectRoom event that Jaybo and Remi/Rough held last month in London with Juice 126. The artists combined their talents to create three collaborative pieces of work on the night. This nicely produced video gives some background of the project coming together, along with footage of the live painting itself, so now you can enjoy the fun even if you couldn’t make it. The lights were dimmed, the walls were painted black, and the spotlights were perfectly positioned.
