Recap / Videos: KAWS – “A Virtual Reality Experience”

For those that missed the unveiling of KAWS’ new virtual reality experience created with the help Visionaire, Artnet has nice recap of the event here. Visitors at the New York Public Library were taken on a studio visit with the Brooklyn-based artist, which quickly turns into a kaleidoscope of colors, misbehaving characters, and surreal imagery when he leaves the room. Upcoming: Okuda – “Lost Olympus” @ StolenSpace

Tonight (February 2nd) in London, StolenSpace will be holding the opening reception for Okuda’s new show entitled Lost Olympus. The new body of work from the Spanish artist features his representations of the mythological gods and characters from ancient Greece, painted in his signature multicolored geometric patterns. His vibrant imagery are sort of deconstructions as he mixes this many-hued approach with the other textures and patterns, a technique he also uses on the streets where he made his name. Releases: FriendsWithYou – “Little Cloud Pocket Amulet”

Earlier today, FriendsWithYou release a new sculpture edition – the Little Cloud Pocket Amulet. Limited to a run of 1000, the collectible meant to be an “enduring symbol of love and light as well as the idea that everything has a soul”  is made from brass plated lead-free pewter and will cost $60. On 21st of January, Vroom and Varossieau in Amsterdam opened a solo exhibition by Belgium street artist and urban interventionist Jaune. I Wish You Could See This For Real includes a series of new stencil-based pieces along with site specific installation that the artist created in the gallery. Using sanitation workers as his main characters, his work is always focused on the paradox between the visible and the invisible. Tomorrow, January 29th (1-4pm), at the New York Public Library, Visionaire will unveiling its latest virtual reality experience featuring the work of KAWS. After a high profile showing at Harbour City Hong Kong in 2014 (covered), Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be returning the the Asian city-state for an exhibition with the HOCA Foundation. POW! WOW! Hawaii will be making its return for 2017 with a new roster of artists (international and local) as well as fresh new programming and art shows. Previews: Ben Tolman – “WELTSCHMERZ” @ Gallery Neptune and Brown

Gallery Neptune and Brown in Washington, DC, will be holding the opening reception (5-7pm) tomorrow night (January 28th) for Ben Tolman’s new solo show. Collectively entitled WELTSCHMERZ, or WORLD PAIN in German, the new detailed drawings (ink and gouache on paper) from the locally-based artist tries to draw attention to ideas like corporate greed, dirty politics, and poverty. The compositions and imagery seem to take influence from artists like Hieronymus Bosch and M.C. Escher and must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Discuss Ben Tolman here.
