This Saturday night, March 24th, the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica will play host to a group exhibition celebrating 18 years of Juxtapoz goodness. An excellent lineup of artists have submitted work to pay their respects to the counter-culture magazine that has revolutionized the art scene including Marion Peck, Mark Ryden, Andrew Schoultz, Souther Salazar, Anthony Ausgang, Tiffany Bozic, Candice Tripp, SHAG and many more. Studio Visits: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Jokes On Me…” @ LeBasse Projects (Chinatown)

Coming up this Saturday night (March 24th), the LeBasse Projects in Chinatown will be presenting a collection sculptural works from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) that he has been working for the last several years. The showing, entitled Jokes On Me…, features customized figures of iconic toys from childhood as well his own creations putting his skills with a range of mediums including plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood. Preview: Ericailcane – “Una Vita Violente” @ FIFTY24MX Gallery

Tomorrow night in Mexico City, Italian street specialist Ericailcane will be opening up a show alongside compatriot HitneS at the FIFTY24MX Gallery. This new body of work, Una Vita Violente, was inspired by writings of Pier Paolo Pasolini, and will metaphorically explore the human condition at its most brutal state through his signature animal characters rendered in his illustrative style. Last Friday, one of China’s most famous contemporary artists finished creating his last commissioned gunpowder drawing for his upcoming exhibition, Sky Ladder, at the Los Angeles MOCA. Cai Guo-Qiang’s third explosive effort (see our coverage of first and second sessions) resulted in Childhood Spaceship, a monumental piece (13′ x 108′) that featured imagery and memories that have sparked the artist’s curiously as a youth. This Saturday night, March 17th, Todd Schorr (featured) makes a return to Merry Karnowsky with a new selection of paintings collectively entitled Neverlasting Miracles. Michael Heizer – “Levitated Mass” for LACMA (In Transit)

Levitated Mass is a project conceived by artist Michael Heizer in 1968, that has waited until now after he has spent decades looking for an appropriate sized boulder. The installation on the LACMA campus will consist of a 456-foot-long slot, over which is placed said granite megalith, all of which conceptually speaks to “the expanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone, to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering.” This newest construct is one in a […]
