Preview: Yumiko Kayukawa – “Coming Home” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight at Roq La Rue, Japanese artist Yumiko Kayukawa will be introducing a new body of work in her home city entitled Coming Home, which will also be her first solo at the gallery since 2002. The Seattle-based painter has been working to expand her narrative since her show in San Francisco in March (covered) and continues her fascination with her female protagonists and their animal friends presented in complex compositions. A couple of weeks ago, AM paid a visit to Mark Whalen aka Kill Pixie’s studio as he was putting the final touches on his latest collection which will debut this coming weekend at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. Preview: Alex Lukas @ Guerrero Gallery

Alex Lukas continues to delight us here at AM with each series of his distressed cityscapes, and judging by the work in his upcoming untitled solo exhibition at San Francisco’s Guerrero Gallery, he continues to go from strength to strength. Lukas’ representations of global mortality are realised in a series of paintings showing a graffiti’d and desolate landscape in a post-human / post apocalyptic context. This Saturday, Brett Amory (interviewed) will be the opening a fresh show at San Jose’s Anno Domini gallery. The exhibition entitled White Light will be the complementary body of work to our recently covered Dark Light paintings shown at  Jonathan LeVine in July.
