Studio Visit: Korin Faught

This past weekend, AM had the privilege to visit Korin Faught’s studio as she prepares for the opening of her new solo show which will take place at the Corey Helford Gallery. Entitled Voices of the Lake, her latest artwork will focus on the theme of multiples as a way to explore issues of identity and self-reflection. Using photography and self portraits as a starting point for her artwork, Faught is able to give her paintings an aura of mystery and elusiveness. Equally important, her latest […]

Previews: José Parlá – “Character Gestures” @ OHWOW (LA)

José Parlá explores that delicate balance between creation and destruction. As if ancient relics recovered from some archeological dig, his paintings are like modern hieroglyphs each telling a story of a time and place, that of the here and now. While taking on a timeless feel, the protagonist in his tale has always been the city. Dynamic juxtapositions – roughness and fluidity, complexity and minimalism, harmony and chaos – illuminate the soul of his urban muse. With his first solo exhibition since Walls, Diaries, and […]

Preview / Installation: Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ Boston ICA

After presenting The Big Easy with her stunning Thalassa installation at the New Orleans Museum of Art in June, Swoon (interviewed) is moving on to her next project.  On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) has commissioned the Brooklyn-based artist to create an installation for the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall. The 400-pound, suspended bamboo sculpture entitled Anthropocene Extinction will soar over 40 feet, be accented by her signature labor intensive cut paper, and will be unveiled this Saturday, […]

A couple weeks back, we brought you coverage of LUDO’s (interviewed) recent US street art tour, as well as reference to his upcoming show with High Roller Society in London. We now have some tasty preview images to share from what will be the French artist’s second solo exhibition of the year. Opening Friday, September 9th, Metamorphosis will see LUDO continue the evolution of his signature Frankenstein-esque, green-tinged creatures, much like was seen during his impressive Zurich show, La Belle Vie (covered), back in April. […]

Preview: Pedro Matos – “Ephemera” @ Shooting Gallery

Portuguese artist Pedro Matos is set to open his first solo show in the United States on September 3rd at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Entitled Ephemera, the new body of work features his oil on canvas paintings emulating the torn and faded posters frequently seen pasted on the side of buildings in an urban environment. As always, Pedro’s imagery juxtaposes beauty and decay as well as focuses on society’s downtrodden and forgotten. More photos of him working on the new paintings after the […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Brian Viveros – “Returning Art To The Unclean” @ Last Rites

Recently, AM was fortunate enough to visit the studio of artist Brian M. Viveros. In preparation for his show titled Returning Art To The Unclean opening on September 3rd, the artist has further expands on his signature style which often features extremely sensual women under an aura of pin up style imagery. Working with portraits instead of full body images, Viveros’ style carries a weight of emotion and feeling that’s often hidden underneath the gaze of his female creations. The various influences which he borrows […]

Openings: ROA @ INOPERAbLe (Vienna)

ROA, famed street muralist with a predilection for painting animal dissections, recently landed (although he did manage to get in a pre-emptive strike) in Vienna for a solo show at the INOPERAbLE gallery. The Belgium painter produced a new body of work consisting of small drawings, paintings on found objects, and a large interactive wall piece. As he continues his anatomical explorations, ROA still finds way to try new things and keep things fresh – this time notably with pull down screens as well as […]

Studio Visit: Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie)

Last week, we featured a video teaser for Mark Whalen’s latest exhibition entitled Anomaly. We were fortunate enough to be able to follow this up with a visit to his studio and document the some of the process as he readies for his September 10th show at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. If that video didn’t blow you away, this visit should at the least give you a great indication of the hard work put forth by the Australian born artist. Whalen, who also goes by […]

Preview / Studio Visit: Jeff Soto for “Les Enfants TERRIBLES” (Lyon)

Last week, AM was invited over to visit Jeff Soto (interviewed) in his new studio in Riverside. The multi-purpose complex not only housed his workspace and office but also a tattoo parlor, a clothing line, as well as the office of childhood friend Maxx242. We were looking forward to seeing some new paintings from Jeff, seeing as he was surrounded by other creative talents. What you see above is some of the work he will be bringing to Lyon during the opening week of the Lyon Biennale for […]
