Armory Week ’10: First Look at The Armory Show

We had a chance to take a first look at this year’s enormous Armory Show, which officially opened in NYC yesterday. After spending most of the afternoon, we still felt like we had rushed through the contemporary half of the fair shown on Pier 94, and we didn’t even get to Pier 92, the other half which focuses on modern art. We will definitely be going back over the next few days to make sure to give you full coverage. But until then, take a […]

Showing: “Fresh” @ Thinkspace Gallery

When we visited Thinkspace a couple weeks ago to check out Damon Soule’s solo show, we also took in the “Fresh” group show in the project room. The appropriately named show featured some new young talent on the Silverlake gallery’s roster including Linnea Strid (seen above), Josie Morway, and Jacub Gagnon among others. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Streets: Below Las Vegas with Logan Hicks

Inspired by Matt O’Brien’s book “Beneath the Neon – Life and Death in the Las Vegas Tunnels”, Logan Hicks (interviewed) recently took an interesting look at the massive system of drainage tunnels underneath the city of sin. Portions of the more than 300 miles of subterranean passageways are covered in graffiti and the feel of the place kind of reminds us of the underground work of Brazilian street artist Zezao. More pics after the jump.

Showing: Clare Rojas – “We They, We They” @ Ikon Gallery

Last time we saw Clare Rojas, she was showing with Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee) and Andrew Jeffrey Wright at New Image Art. She currently has a show in the UK at the Ikon Gallery entitled “We They, We They” which will be running until the March 21st. Stop by if you are in the area as it looks like the “Mission School” artist has put together a pretty fantastic installation with her folk-inspired art including her signature painted banjos. More images after the jump…

Benefit: “Idea for the Here and Now” @ Fountain Fair

Christina Ray Gallery (formerly Glowlab) and Fountain Art Fair are behind an unique group exhibition to benefit Transformazium, an emerging collaborative arts center in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The show, called “Idea for the Here and Now,” will feature prints by David Ellis, Steve Powers, Jose Parla, Swoon and others based on the idea of “the transformation of resources into tangible social and economic benefits for small communities and the world at large.” The limited edition screenprints were all hand-pulled at the Braddock Screen Printing Shop, and […]

Interviews: Camille Rose Garcia – “Down The Rabbit Hole” Exhibition and Book Signing Tour

In anticipation of Camille Rose Garcia’s upcoming exhibition and book signing at Merry Karnowsky Gallery this weekend March 6th, we talked to the artist a little bit about her work on the “Alice in Wonderland” book that was released last month among other things.  If you can’t make this signing, she’ll also be in Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle. Check out the full interview after the jump.

Preview: Ryan Dineen & Jacques Oule – “Cityscrapes” @ Show & Tell Gallery

Toronto’s Show & Tell Gallery continues to bring a succession of new and interesting artists to our attention and this time, it is the turn of Toronto homeboy Ryan Dineen. For Dineen, working with oil on canvas seems to be as comfortable as working outdoors on his impressive murals and graff pieces. Dineen portrays the landscape of the city with a level of edginess that we love – sombre, weathered, faded, decayed – evoking thoughts of past glories enjoyed within the setting. Fellow Toronto based […]

Preview: Chris Peters @ Last Rites Gallery

Los Angeles based artist Chris Peters has a show opening this Saturday, March 6th at Last Rites Gallery in NYC. Peters’ paintings are full of symbolism, somber atmosphere, and strangely enough they elicit an emotional response from viewers even though his main characters are devoid of flesh and skin, but maybe that’s the point. Besides providing the nice preview images after the jump, Chris has also kindly agreed to mail a signed showcard to the first reader who can leave a comment telling us how […]

AM stopped by the gallery as the artists were neck deep in creating murals and installs for the […]
