Previews: Evah Fan – “Weird View, Weird Few” @ Land Gallery

On June 24th, Land Gallery in Portland will be opening a new show entitled Weird View, Weird Few from Evah Fan. The Oakland based illustrator and artist’s gouache paintings often feature her eclectic cast of human and animal characters in unusual configurations, position, and situations, all rendered in her flat, multicolored style. The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo of Málaga recently opened Miss Van‘s first show at a museum. On 21st of June, the Barcelona-based artist introduced El Viento en Mi Pelo (For The Wind in My Hair), a show overviewing the last three years of her career. Next door to the main hall of Art Basel (covered – part 1, part 2), the Unlimited section was reserved for mostly large site specific installations. Curated by New York-based curator Gianni Jetzer, the idea for this platform was to go beyond the traditional fair booth limitations and allow exhibitors to present large size sculptures, paintings, videos, installations and performances. The twelfth edition of the Volta Fair in Basel returned to its dome home at Markthalle. As one of the satellite events to the main Art Basel expo (covered – part 1, part 2), the fair featured a selection of galleries and artists that included 68 exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide. The London edition of the Affordable Art Fair is a twice-yearly event alternating between both sides of the River Thames. From 16–19 June, it was held in Hampstead Heath with over 100 galleries exhibiting works priced between £100 and £5,000. Moving closer to its big brother, the Scope Art Show is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in Basel at a new location three blocks away from the main fair (covered – part 1, part 2). Last month, nine artist headed to Manchester in the UK to participate in Cities of Hope, a project put together by Vestige, a not for profit social justice organization that uses the arts to inspire action on the social issues. The goal was for each link each artist to a local charity that fights for the lives that are affected on their chosen issue. Three years since his debut show with the gallery (covered), the New York-based artist is back in Giswil for another exclusive showcase with More Gallery. Tom Sachs’ current exhibition (through July 24) is unprecedented in the 30 year history of the Noguchi Museum in that he is the first artist to be awarded a solo at the institution other than the original founder.
