POW WOW ’19 / Streets: Shepard Fairey

Last month in Honolulu, Shepard Fairey (interviewed) created a mural for this year’s edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii. Attending the street art festival for the first time, the American artist decided to address global warming and preserving the environment for future generations with his new piece entitled Golden Future? CASIS Mission Patch ARK1 by Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey was recently commissioned by CASIS (the Center of Advancement of Science in Space), set up by Congress to manage the National Laboratory on the International Space Station, to create a mission patch. The piece for ARK1 (Advancing Research Knowledge 1) featured elements of some of Shep’s iconic design elements as well as an abstracted form of the ISS. Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Last month, we took you onto the streets of Denver as we took a look at some of the pieces Shepard Fairey left in his wake as a show featuring work from him, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser was held at the Black Book Gallery. Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey.
