Shepard Fairey speaking @ the Corcoran Museum (DC)

Influential street artist Shepard Fairey has been a cornerstone of the US urban art scene for more than a decade, but his influence trancended mere street art after he created an image of Barack Obama so powerful, that it became the image that symbolized Obama’s presidential campaign. How fitting that the LA based Fairey will come to Washington DC to speak about the social and political issues that have influenced his art work. The famous Corcoran Museum will hold a symposium with Shepard Fairey and Al Farrow. Both artists will […]

Interviews: Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey (interviewed) officially became a household name in 2008 when he created the Obama Hope poster. But even years before that, the South Carolina-born artist already had a notorious reputation for his André the Giant Has a Posse sticker that transformed into the now legendary OBEY GIANT art campaign. Through his career, Fairey has addressed critical topics such as climate change, the Me Too movement, world politics, while basically reinventing the way people see art and the urban landscape. On October 5th, his series of shows around […]

POW WOW ’19 / Streets: Shepard Fairey

Last month in Honolulu, Shepard Fairey (interviewed) created a mural for this year’s edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii. Attending the street art festival for the first time, the American artist decided to address  global warming and preserving the environment for future generations with his new piece entitled Golden Future? Working through his birthday, the wall was completed with the help of his mural crew and featured his distinctive palette and imagery. CASIS Mission Patch ARK1 by Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey was recently commissioned by CASIS (the Center of Advancement of Science in Space), set up by Congress to manage the National Laboratory on the International Space Station, to create a mission patch. The piece for ARK1 (Advancing Research Knowledge 1) featured elements of some of Shep’s iconic design elements as well as an abstracted form of the ISS. Take a look at the video below for more information behind the project. Via Designboom. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: RISK Collaborations (Shepard Fairey) – Part I

Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Using the area as his personal canvas, the LA-based writer has enlisted many of his friends for collaborative murals including Shepard Fairey in the piece seen above. We’ll have more for you soon as other notables like Mear One, Smash, Anthony Lister, Gregory Siff, and more get up on backgrounds courtesy of Risky. […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser @ Black Book Gallery

Last month, we took you onto the streets of Denver as we took a look at some of the pieces Shepard Fairey left in his wake as a show featuring work from him, Evan Hecox, and Jim Houser was held at the Black Book Gallery. We now have photos from that opening as art fans checked out Shep’s iconic imagery, Hecox’s textured multimedia works, and Houser’s installation-based pieces. Enjoy the full photo set below. Streets: Shepard Fairey, D*Face, and Logan Hicks for T&J Art Walk (Oslo) Part II

After mentioning Faile’s (featured) wall for the T&J Art Walk (and the fun they had with a ping pong table) earlier in the month in an Overtime article, we thought it was time for an update. The event in Oslo was put on in  support of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) and to allow memorial murals honoring the victims of the horrific terror attack of July 22. This will all culminate with an art show with proceeds to benefit the HRW (but you can also donate here). You can […]

Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey. The work however may not be permanent as the city has only committed to hosting the murals through July 2012. More […]

Releases: “MAYDAY: The Art of Shepard Fairey” Book

Following in a long line of elegantly produced Shepard Fairey exhibition catalogs, a new publication has just been unveiled to honor his historic creative outpouring that kicked off this past summer’s art season. While landmark in it’s own right as a result of the scope and scale of the effort, the instantly iconic show also served as an emphatic going out party for Deitch Projects, the game-changing gallery in a large part responsible for taking street art out of the shadows and into the limelight. […]
