Baby Tattooville ’10: Gift Bag and Goodies

One of the biggest barriers confronting many who consider attending Baby Tattooville is the cost. Although it may seem a little pricey, what you receive in return more than makes up for it. Beyond the experience of spending a weekend elbow-to-elbow with your favorite artists, staying in one of the best hotels in Southern California and being surrounded by like-minded friends, BT attendees get to take home a plethora of amazing stuff, including original art, prints, toys, books, stickers and magazines. More after the jump…

Mars-1 x Oliver Vernon x Damon Soule Collaboration

What do you get when you put three artists together over Halloween weekend and let them all work on one painting together?  A pretty intense collaboration… Often times when artists work on the same canvas, what initially may have seemed like a good idea may not turn out as well as one would hope.  Discordant styles, varying familiarity with different mediums, and differing artistic visions can all be detrimental to the final result. We have witnessed much of the maneuvering and politics of this interaction […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Travis Louie’s “Creature Parade”

Baby Tattooville‘s Secret Society was taken into Travis Louie‘s gorgeously illustrated Victorian and Edwardian world of human oddities and mythical beings with “strange grooming habits” for one weekend. What was even better was that lucky attendees this year were able to take home the experience with a original portrait by the man himself. Yes, not just a print, not just an ordinary multiple, but a unique, hand-drawn piece of art that you may have witnessed with your own eyes created in person. More after the […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: “The Goodie Bag”

One of the more common questions Baby Tattooville attendees are asked is “what do you get out of it?” Well, aside from an intimate setting to socialize with artists and collectors, and an opportunity to gain insight into artists and their work through various discussions and reverse studio visits (more on this later), there are of course more material benefits. The “goodie bags” are distributed to BT attendees at the end of the event and includes originals, prints, and various art products from all the […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Buff Monster

One thing that Baby Tattooville attendees definitely noticed this year was the fact that they received much more original art to take home with them.  Last year, there seemed to be more “art products” given out, ie prints, art toys, etc… That is not to say that they aren’t appreciated, especially the hand customized figures by Buff Monster for this years BT.  Throughout the weekend, Buff Monster could be seen working on the toys as well as sketching for fans.  You will also soon see […]

Baby Tattooville Day 1: Jeff Soto Studio Visit

After a quick round of mingling and refreshments, the participants of Baby Tattooville were invited to the heart of the Jeff Soto factory.  Once there, the attendees were treated to a “preview” of Jeff’s upcoming solo show “Turning in Circles” at the Riverside Art Museum in December (previously teased). With over 15 “in progress” paintings to delight our eyes, AM was astounded to find out that Jeff is only PARTIALLY done with his plans for the upcoming show. He has a gigantic installation planned and will also look […]

Baby Tattooville Day 1: 3-5 pm

Baby Tattooville started off with an introduction panel of participating artists as well as passing out of some items to participants. One of these was a limited print by Shag that doubled as a name tag. After the introduction we were instructed to make a mark on a canvas with a charcoal marker which Michael Whelan will convert into a work of art over the weekend.  Now we are off to Jeff Soto’s dinner for the “Art Jam” as well as dinner…  More to follow. […]

Showing: Jonathan Chapline – “Virtual Window” @ Hawkins Ferry House

Jonathan Chapline recently unveiled a unique exhibition entitled Virtual Window, which was staged at the Hawkins Ferry House, built to display the namesake’s collection of modern art on the shores of Lake St. Clair. Working off a selection of historical images, blueprints and present day images of the architectural space as well as Ferry’s collection (most of which was posthumously donated to the Detroit Institute of Art), the Brooklyn-based artist created four large paintings, a diptych portraying elongated arched windows, and a sculpture inspired by Giacometti’s Standing […]
