Grateful Palate’s James Jean Wine

When AM visited James Jean’s “Kindling” show at Jonathan Levine (here), the gallery served up some delicious wine with some of JJ’s artwork on it. Turns out that James designed three series of wine labels for California-based Grateful Palate. There are three different types of wine in the line: “Southern Belle” Shiraz, “Diddley Boo” Riesling, and “Poor Thing” Grenache. Each bottle has one of three different artwork on the label. So, continuing with our coverage of artist & vineyard collaborations (here) that entertain the eyes […]

James Jean – Final cover: Fables #81

You know the saying: “All good things must…” Well, after almost 8 fantastic years as the cover artist for the ground breaking comic series Fables, James Jean has finally completed his last cover for Vertigo/DC marking the close of a chapter in his astonishing career as an illustrator. But don’t worry, judging by the tremendous success of his first gallery show “Kinding” at Jonathan Levine last month (here), we’re positive that he’s destined for even bigger things as he starts his career as a “fine […]

Manifest Hope – Inauguration Party: Shepard Fairey x friends

Manifest Hope: DC zenithed with a sensational party on it’s final night, Monday. On the eve of the presidential inauguration, the artists and volunteers that led the charge of Barack Obama’s triumphant grassroots campaign celebrated with a star-studded event that rivaled many of the inaugural balls the following night. With live performances by Santo Gold,  Adam Freeland, DJ Trouble Maker, Grammy winning artists: De La Soul, Moby, and of course DJ Diabetic himself (Shepard Fairey); it was no wonder the venue was packed to the brim and rockin’ deep […]

Interviews: James “Dalek” Marshall

James Marshall, aka Dalek, is known for brightly colored, superflat paintings consisting of his signature Space Monkeys. But since his 2007 show at New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Desperate, Rejected and Angry, the military brat and once graffiti artist has been pushing the boundaries of his style, becoming more and more geometric and abstract. AM chatted with Marshall recently about British science fiction, art fairs and beyond. Read the interview after the jump.

Openings: James Jean “Kindling” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Last night, Jonathan Levine hosted an exclusive friends and family viewing of James Jean’s Kindling. The Chelsea gallery was filled from the opening minutes with many New York art notables including: Susan Sarandon, Eric White, David Choe, Jonathan Viner, Esao Andrew, Travis Louie, and Molly Crabapple. The stunning show was a visual mix of abstract, illustrative, and an “east meets west” fusion of artistic ingenuity. With most pieces gobbled up before the doors even opened, there was little doubt in the minds of many that […]

Interviews/Preview: James Jean – “Kindling” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

One of the worst kept secrets in the “fine art world is about to be revealed at Jonathan Levine Gallery this Saturday. As previously teased (here), James Jean will be opening his uber anticipated show Kindling in New York City. The critically acclaimed and accomplished illustrator is finally making his “fine art” premier and we brought you a little peek of this upcoming monster. James was gracious enough to provide AM an interview for you readers.  JJ spoke about the show: Kindling, his work on […]

James Jean – Sketchbooks

James Jean posted up another 150 photos or so into his already vast database of sketchbook images a couple days ago.  Apparently, he noticed there were some missing from 2004-2005, and only recently was he able to upload them.  Frankly, we don’t know anyone as organized and as thorough when it comes to recording their sketchbooks.  Some interesting stuff as he not only shows his drawings, but also texture studies.  His upcoming show “Kindling” at Jonathan Levine is probably the first big show of 2009 […]

Outsiders @ The New Art Gallery Walsall

The show features Blu, David Choe, Miranda Donovan, Faile, Conor Harrington, Todd James a.k.a REAS (seen above), Paul Insect, Invader, Lucy McLauchlan, Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan, JR, Vhils, Jonathan Yeo, and Zevs and appears to have some different pieces when compared to the “Outsiders” show in New York. Photos after […]

Joao Ruas – New Fables Artist

It was announced recently that Brazilian artist Joao Ruas has been pegged to replace James Jean as the new cover artist for the legendary comic book series Fables. In fact, he has already finished two covers (one seen above and one after the jump). We first noticed Ruas at the “Drawing Room” show curated by Audrey Kawasaki and ironically, his work at that time reminded us of Jean. Now that award winning artist Jean is moving on to the gallery circuit, Joao will will have […]

Gen Art Vanguard – Basel Party

Friday night ended with a bang at the OBEY x Z Trip party. But AM never told the tale of how this massive night of Basel parties started. The Gen Art Vanguard party was the Basel Friday night jumpoff where the “who’s who” of Miami were at. With heavy hitter sponsors such as FAGE, Citibank, and Bombay Sapphire footing the bill for drinks, Gen Art Vanguard was transformed into a true Miami mega event.  Stars and artists lined up to grab their VIP goodie bags while everyone else […]
