Videos: Dabs Myla – “Christmas Mural 2011” (Los Angeles)

Late last year during the holidays, we brought you pictures from Dabs Myla‘s latest mural which took place in the Culver City of Los Angeles (covered). It turns out the project (set up through Branded Arts and Thinkspace Gallery) has a story behind it that could be just as interesting as the aesthetic value of the mural itself. Filmmaker and AM contributor Carlos Gonzalez documented the project from beginning to end and got a chance to hang out with the couple during this entire process. The result […]

Openings: London Art Fair 2012 (Part I)

On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage. Also on display by the gallery are six remarkable David Dawson photographs of the late Lucian Freud in his studio, dating from 2007 to 2011. This is […]

Streets: Bumblebee – “Mutual Feeling” (Los Angeles)

As if they do not have enough problems in their lives already, the homeless in Southern California have had quite the struggle recently, ranging from being beaten by a famous frozen yogurt purveyor to being targeted, stalked, and killed by a military vet. News stories like these bring to the forefront that being homeless is still a very real problem for many and it does not only affect men and women that are down on their luck. Young boys and girls are also affected by […]

Openings: Sage Vaughn – “Last Year” @ Known Gallery

Over the weekend, the Known Gallery exhibited the work of artist Sage Vaughn (featured) in an exhibit titled Last Year. The first solo showing for the UK-based artist at the gallery featured a collection of large woven editions based on his paintings and on his collages from his Envelope Series. While working with a different type of material, Vaughn still managed to infuse his ironic take on popular culture. Whether it was images referencing the late 70s to early 80s or his use of animals […]

David Choe Paints Tribute To Beaten Asian Teen

By now, everyone has probably seen the video that went viral which showed a group of people brutally beating a Chicago teenager. Thankfully, it sounds like the Asian victim of the racially motivated attack appears to not have sustained serious injuries. David Choe (featured) recently painted this tribute mural to hopefully bring attention to this issue as well as get some of these cowards put in jail if they can be recognized. See what he had to say after the jump…

Openings: Esao Andrews – “Nowhere” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Recently, Thinkspace Gallery hosted a solo exhibition by artist Esao Andrews (interviewed) entitled Nowhere. The night featured a great collection of artwork that touches upon various themes which fuse a sense of reality with an aura of the fantastical. Pastel colors contrast nicely with dark colors which give the artwork a sense of brooding and melancholy. The artist was present for the exhibit and briefly discussed his affinity for at times referencing real life events and places and then utilizing those images as the means […]

Streets / Update: Escif

Besides the work from Escif that we brought you in the last couple months, he has also updated his blog with some walls that we haven’t had a chance to show you. After enjoying these new pics, also take a look at some footage from the Nuart Festival back in October where the Spanish artist put up quite a bit of street work as well as filled a room with a flag based installation (covered). More murals and video after the jump…
