Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Circulatory System” @ White Walls

Saturday evening, White Walls opened its doors to Augustine Kofie’s second solo show at the gallery, Circulatory System (previewed in our studio visit). The new body of work consisted of 30 pieces including small studies, medium and large scale pieces on wood and canvas, as well as a few hand painted multiple prints. This show concentrates on circular shapes in an interconnect system, while consistently maintaining the draftsman-like quality in his signature style. Openings: Travis Louie – “Curious Pets” @ Merry Karnowsky

Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist. ABOVE (interviewed), whose giveaway on AM of his new PASSPORT book we just announced yesterday, is currently in Miami preparing for his upcoming show with White Walls at the SCOPE fair next month. Update: Swoon (London & New Orleans)

It looks like Swoon (interviewed) is in London at the moment judging from this piece seen on the streets by the good people at Hooked Blog. The wheatpasted image is modeled after the stunning Thalassa installation she created for the New Orleans Museum of Art back in June and is a marker for her upcoming show at Black Rat Projects next month. Mars-1 opened up his show, Everything Under The Sun (previewed) to a packed house at Fecal Face Dot Gallery’s temporary space in the inner Richmond area of San Francisco Saturday night (the gallery’s usual spot is under renovation due to a fire at a neighboring building). The show included a few large scale paintings, including a tondo continuing his eye boggling Infinite Tapestry series. Streets: Herakut (Los Angeles)

During the past week, the duo known as Herakut were in Los Angeles as part of Wende Museum’s Behind The Wall project (covered). However, the artist collective also took time to do a large scale mural which featured their signature style and character design. The wall, which took two days to complete, sits not too far from the city’s Chinatown area and it continues to show the technique that the artists have perfected during their time together. In anticipation of his solo exhibition at Galerie Perrotin on November 19th, AM recently stopped by JR’s New York studio. The show entitled Encrages will take over both floors of Emmanuel Perrotin’s beautiful flagship space. The TED prize winning photographer is going to need it as this giant exhibition will bring together many of JR’s past projects including Women are Heroes and Wrinkles in the City. Last weekend, the non-profit Luggage Store Gallery held a benefit auction to support their efforts in programming future exhibitions, Tenderloin National Forest, public art programs, artist in residency as well as the Short Cuts and The Creative Music Series. Much of the works that were up for auction were by artists the gallery supported in the early stages of their careers.
