Previews: Frieze London ’11 – Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

Running from Thursday, October 13th to Sunday, October 16th over in London, Frieze 2011 is primed to kick back into action next week in Regent’s Park. Traditionally one of stronger perennial fairs, which will also see a New York version for the first time in May of next year, Team Gallery has become one of the compelling staples at the UK event. Much like last year, the New York gallery will be bringing some brand new work from their New York-based photographer Ryan McGinley. In […]

Streets: Escif & Ericailcane (Valencia)

Serial collaborator Ericailcane has instead opted to trade his Italian neighbor Blu for Spanish street art crusader Escif. Ironically, Blu and Escif collaborated together in Valencia on an impressive tandem mural back in July for Arquitecturas Colectivas. Quite clearly, the three artists share a tight bond and mutual respect for one another. With Escif’s recent efforts at the FAME and Nuart festivals, it’s hard to deny he more than belongs in the same sentence as the other two outdoor icons. This piece from several months […]

Preview: Ron English – “English 101” @ Post No Bills

Later tonight, October 6th, Ron English (featured) and the Post No Bills Gallery will unleash the artist’s next show entitled English 101. The exhibition will feature a large collection of limited-edition prints and other artwork which will surely please his fans and art aficionados who may not be familiar with his artwork. As always, English will present work which touches upon his pop culture sensibilities and point out the ironies that one sees in modern advertising, politics and current society. Here’s a sneak peek of […]

Releases: Tim Barber / FriendsWithYou / Harmony Korine @ Exhibition A

Members-only print house Exhibition A (membership is free and open to public) has recently released a host of worthwhile and affordable editions from a strong roster of contemporary artists. The first new release comes from their Feature Artist of the Month, Tim Barber. The New York-based photographer, who made waves with his breakout solo exhibition Untitled Photographs last year, plays in the same thematic realms as friends and contemporaries Ryan McGinley and Dash Snow. Untitled (bluff), which actually was one of the stars of that […]

Streets: How & Nosm (Los Angeles)

The Spanish-born twins How & Nosm arrived in Los Angeles nearly 2 weeks before their next solo show entitled Achtung!, which opens on October 15th at the Known Gallery. This time around, they are painting what may be one of their biggest murals up to date. As part of the L.A. Freewalls project, the mural can be seen from quite a distance, and is attracting large crowds of people who can’t help but notice the three color palette heavily utilized by the prolific duo. The […]

Video: Dale Grimshaw – ‘Semi-Detached’ @ Signal Gallery

Check out this nicely put together video showing Dale Grimshaw getting busy with the work from his upcoming exhibition Semi-Detached opening this Thursday 6th October at Signal Gallery. Dale’s fourth solo show in London will see the artist unleash some of his personal demons, which are expressed in the metaphoric form of his violent father and the troubled upbringing Dale and his family experienced throughout his childhood. Expect some powerful, disturbing and very personal imagery in the form of oil paintings and woodblock prints. Sounds […]

Openings: Michael Leavitt – “The Art Army Royalty” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Several weeks ago, showing alongside Dylan Egon, the The Art Army Royalty of Michael Leavitt (interviewed) were on full display at New York’s Jonathan LeVine gallery. The solo show was made up entirely of Michael’s signature sculptural tributes to artists featuring a melding of their eerily accurate portraits and features of their work. Artists like Ai Weiwei, Damien Hirst, and Lucian Freud were all free game for his special interpretations. You can see all the individual pieces here, but take a look at more opening […]

Auctions / Benefits: Christie’s “Artists for Haiti” Results

A couple weeks back, the Artists for Haiti benefit auction racked in massive numbers to a standing room only, celebrity studded audience at Christie’s Rockefeller Center salesroom in New York. Organized by David Zwirner (ranked 4th on last years ArtReview “Power 100” list) and Ben Stiller, who has supported Haiti through his Stiller Foundation non-profit since the catastrophic earthquake, the charitable event brought together an inspired list of of contemporary art’s most important artists, such as Raymond Pettibon, Nate Lowman, Rudolf Stingel, Jasper Johns, Zuang […]

Streets: Cyrcle. (Los Angeles)

Last week, the artist collective known as Cyrcle. (featured) painted a mural in the midst of Culver City, California. Keeping the same theme of We Never Die, which was highlighted during their solo show a couple months ago, the group showed that they can smoothly move from the gallery space to the streets and back. The entire mural was a week long process but the results were of interest to anyone who drove by the building complex. The mural project spearheaded by Branded Arts which […]
