Preview: Harry Potter Tribute @ Nucleus Gallery

It was inevitable, especially with the second part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows coming out soon. On July 9th, the Nucleus Gallery will be hosting a tribute group show ($2 entry fee) with a huge list of artists scheduled to participate and do their best interpretation of characters and scenes from the popular series. Openings: Jen Lobo – “Inherit The Wound” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday night, Jen Lobo unveiled a new body of work collectively entitled “Inherit The Wound”, sharing the gallery walls with Scott Radke at Thinkspace. The show featured four new oil paintings on wood panel alongside two new watercolor works on paper, all depicting her fanciful renderings of wildlife including her signature whales. Ai Weiwei Released by Chinese Authorities

After being detained since April 3rd, the Chinese state news agency, Xinhau, today reported Ai Weiwei has finally been released on bail “because of his good attitude in confessing his crimes.” China’s most well known artist and activist, who has long been an outspoken critic of domestic humanitarian policies and effectively foreshadowed his own dire fate in his last blog entry before it was taken down the government, spent almost three months – 81 days – behind closed doors on alleged “economic charges”, though one […]

It’s been a year since we last saw a solo (covered) from Lisbon based street artist Pedro Matos. It looks like he has used the time in between shows wisely getting ready for an exhibition at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco in September. He’ll be continuing his portraiture of society’s downtrodden and neglected, but it looks like he has some new tricks up his sleeve as well judging from the preview image above. Last Saturday night in Culver City, Scott Radke (interviewed) creatures ran wild at the Thinkspace Gallery. Owls, a cobra, flowers, and other unidentified and strange characters from the Ohio-based sculptor took over the space with their unsettling realistic yet beautiful faces, many of which also featured incorporated burlap for texture. In a fitting nod to UK graf artist, Tox, who earlier in the month was charged with criminal damages for his ubiquitous tags across London and beyond, Banksy has issued a tribute in the form of his most recent street piece. Perhaps KAWS had a sixth sense as to what was going to happen when he placed his Passing Through Companion at The Standard in New York recently.
