Teaser: “Pattern Recognition” @ Subliminal Projects

On November 6th, Subliminal Projects will be opening a new show “Pattern Recognition”. The premise behind the title is that each artist included has in some way produced work that consists of reoccuring events or objects, not just in a literal sense though. Show up on Saturday night and you will be treated to the works of Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar (some in progress works seen above). Of note, Souther will be reassembling his fantastic “Alejandro” installation […]

Frieze 2010: David Shrigley with Stephen Friedman Gallery

One of the highlights of our Frieze visit was stumbling upon the Stephen Friedman Gallery booth. As an unexpected surprise to us, the entire booth had been dedicated to an installation of David Shrigley’s work. Better still, David walked into the compound whilst we were there and started applying his temporary tattoos to a select few fans who had pre-registered – if only we were more on the ball then AM would be rocking some Shrigley ink of our own. Check out some of our […]

After her Melbourne opening, Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) continued on to Sydney for the second part of her “Tangled” tour at the Outre Gallery locations. Openings: “Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wes Anderson” @ Spoke Art

It appears two things motivate Bay Area residents with a vengeance; Halloween and Wes Anderson. The effects of both were on full display during Spoke Art’s Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wed Anderson (previewed) group exhibition. Curated by our friend Ken Harman, managing online editor over at Hi-Fructose, the event served as the best excuse humanly possible to break out the cowboy hats, track suites, headbands and Zissuo red beanies in honor of one of the finest writer/directors of our generation. Despite the excellent costume […]

Showing: Push – “Divided Attention” @ Known Gallery

Currently on view at LA’s landmark contemporary graffiti-inspired institution Known Gallery is the monumental first solo show by Push.  Dubbed “the thinking man’s graffiti artist” by LA Weekly, the self-taught Push has been hugely influenced by fellow AWR/MSK crew member, mentor, and close friend SABER (interviewed). Push’s abstract and colorful paintings look deceptively simple, yet are nuanced and sophisticated in their execution, color palette, and look.  You can tell that a lot of thought, effort, and consideration went into each and every vibrant and energetic […]

A couple of Saturdays back, Tara McPherson captivated the NY crowd with a beautiful new body of work entitled “The Bunny in the Moon” at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show consisted of a series of paintings featuring her lovely ladies with their animal friends and a wall installation of one-eyed flower sculptures, all rendered mostly in her signature pink and light blue. More opening pics after the jump…

Studio Visits: Greg “Craola” Simkins @ Gallery 1988

With Greg’s exhibition opening this Friday night at G1988LA, we decided to drop by Greg’s studio two weeks ago to see how everything was coming along. Greg was finishing up one last painting and everything else was pretty much complete and AMAZING. In addition to a great new body of work, there will be a new print release along with an exclusive release and signing of Greg’s new book “Drawn from the Well”. This is definitely going to be a great one. We will see […]
