Previews: Mark Brown – “Daydreams” @ Gallery 1988 SF

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the rad hand of Mark Brown (interviewed) at work. The last time was at a solo at Gallery 1988 (LA) last year. This time he’s trekking up to No-Cal to visit Gallery1988 (SF) for another solo exhibition called “Daydreams”. The show opens this Friday, June 18th at 7pm. Check out an exclusive sneak preview after the jump.

Highlights: Recommended openings for June 16 – June 19

Summer is in full-swing as we lead into the middle of June. Some major events are going down this week including the big debut of “Mr. Bitchin'”, Robert Williams’ new movie. Other shows on our radar include big Barry McGee & Clare Rojas museum show in Bolinas along with the opening of one of the most prestigious art fairs in the world – Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland featuring a solo showing of works from Kris Kuksi at Joshua Liner’s booth at the fair.

Releases: D*Face T-Shirts

D*Face (interviewed) sent us these great pictures taken on a warm and sunny day in London last week by photographer Viktor Vauthier. What better way to spend an afternoon than with a couple of girls armed with super-soakers? You can bet that we wouldn’t look quite so good in one of these new tees just released in D’s store, but at least we might feel good, as both shirts are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. According to D*Face, the bottles are stripped of their labels […]

Asger Carlsen’s surreal exhibition, Wrong, which originally showed at V1 Gallery in Denmark a couple of months back, is now collected, available to have and hold in your hands in book format.  Flip through the book, arrive at any random image in Wrong, and you’ll understand why it is titled the way it is. Previews: David Choe Monograph Book

David Choe’s (featured) is finally set to release his monograph from Chronicle Books. The self-titled book is 10 years in the making as it details the life, art and cool happenings from David’s illustrious career thus far. We can tell you how awesome this 288 page bad boy is, because we were fortunate enough to preview this with David when we visited his studio before his amazing “Nothing to Declare” show at LAzarides 90210. The good folks at Chronicle had just FedEx’d him a publisher’s proof for […]

Studio Visits: Joe Sorren

It’s fun when your artistic heroes turn out to be as cool as you want them to be, and through all of the love we’ve given to Joe Sorren over the last couple of years, you know that AM was thrilled to visit the artist in his Flagstaff studio last year. Joe took us through his huge studio space where he has a painting area, office, library, drying room and a practice space for his beautiful upright bass he plays in his roots / bluegrass […]

Openings: Herakut – “Happy Doubt Day” @ Gallery Springmann.Varol

German collaborative artists Herakut (interviewed) opened their show “Happy Doubt Day” (previewed) recently at Galerie Springmann.Varol. Along with paintings utilizing their signature mix of photorealistic and graffiti elements, the duo also introduced sculptural pieces that translated their paintings fantastically into 3D form. Also wowing the crowd was a large immersive installation. More photos after the jump…

Fame Fest ’10: Nunca

Another great street artist, Nunca, has started attacking the walls of Grottaglie for this year’s Fame Festival. Set to open in September, it appears that Brazil will have another representative with this expansive mural holding judgment on those in the Italian town that have profited from the earth. More pics after the jump…

Openings: Lisa Yuskavage @ Greengrassi Gallery

AM favorite Lisa Yuskavage is currently exhibiting at London’s Greengrassi Gallery. The New York based artist comes at us with another collection of dazzling works featuring her ever sultry figures of women in their natural state. What’s really cool is that she’s continuing to create smaller works to compliment the larger canvases which already run a pretty penny (hundreds of thousands), much like this gem we saw at David Zwirner from last year’s Art Basel Miami. Check out this breathtaking parade of paintings after the […]
