Previews: Evan Hecox – “Terrain” @ Andenken Gallery

On October 2nd, Andenken Gallery in Amsterdam will be showing Terrain, a solo show by Evan Hecox. With this new body of work, the Denver-based artist is experimenting with more abstract forms and imagery as well as different mediums including acrylic paint, ink, gouache, collage to watercolor or colored pencil. The pieces are loosely based on the flags, so the artist is referring to them as such with titles like Community Flag or Desert Flag. By reusing the same geometric elements in multiple works, he is playing with the relationship […]

Interviews / Setup: Jim Houser – “HUSH” @ Andenken / Battalion Gallery

Jim Houser is currently setting up his upcoming show (previewed) entitled HUSH with Andenken / Battalion Gallery, the American artist’s first solo in Amsterdam. The gallery owner, artist and friend of AM, Hyland Mather aka X-O, used this opportunity to do a little Q&A session with Houser on our behalf. What was planned as an interview, turned into a deep and informative conversation between the two creatives, covering all kinds of subjects from skateboarding, music, traveling, family, rising kids, and last but not least, art. Hyland Mather (HM): Hey Jim, […]

Previews: Jim Houser – “Hush” @ Andenken / Battalion

Andenken / Battalion Gallery in Amsterdam will be opening a solo show by Jim Houser on Friday, June 5th. Hush will feature some new works that the American artist has been making in his recognizable style. From the preview images we received from the gallery, the new pieces seen continue the style of works Houser has always been known for. Mixing a flat, naive painting style, with collage and written words, his emotive pieces usually hide more than one message or story in them. Experimenting with more […]

Showing: KAWS @ ArtZuid 2015

As we previously shared with you, KAWS currently has three sculptures set up in a public space around south Amsterdam. As a part of this year’s ArtZuid 2015 project, the NY-based artist was given one of the most prestigious locations for an iteration of his Along The Way sculptures, previously seen at his show with Mary Boone Gallery (covered). Exhibiting in a different colorway than the one shown in NYC, these two wooden companions measuring an impressive 216 x 176 x 120 inches are located in the middle of Museum Square, […]

Upcoming: ArtZuid 2015

Foundation ArtZuid is currently finishing organizing 2015 edition of their International Sculpture Route in Amsterdam. ArtZuid is an open air sculpture biennial with this year’s route consisting of about 73 monumental outdoor sculptures placed through the Berlage’s Art Deco district in Amsterdam South, just outside the city center. This concept doesn’t only invite people to enjoy art objects in public space by walking or cycling the route, but also, it gives a chance to discover another area of Dutch capital. The fourth edition of the event will take […]

Previews: Clemens Behr – ‘Small Works’ @ Mini Galerie

Berlin-based Clemens Behr opens a solo exhibition this week at Amsterdam’s Mini Galerie entitled Small Works. True to the name of the show, this is a rare chance to get up close and personal to Behr’s typically installation-heavy, and much larger scale works. Working mainly with industrial and salvaged architectural materials, Behr applies an abstract language to his sculptural works, placing otherwise familiar materials out of context and imposing a defiance to logic, gravity and form. His Small Works within this exhibition retain all the (un)familiar […]

Streets: Ludo (Amsterdam)

Ludo (interviewed) recently spent a few days in Amsterdam, leaving his mark around the city and its canals. Pasting mostly skull based pieces, the Paris-based artist left some familiar images as well as introduced few new concepts. As seen in the photos, the works were done around the Jordaan neighborhood of the city, an area already known for great street art. From iconic Faile images, large The London Police murals, to Space Invaders, this old part of the of the capital is now richer which these works by Ludo. […]

Showing: visualSKIN – “Ghost Ship” @ Amsterdam Light Festival

For the newest edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival showing through January 18th, the four person Romania-based architecture collective visualSKIN have created a stunning installation entitled Ghost Ship. Projecting the image of a 17th century onto two perpendicular curtains of weather, the piece references the rich maritime history of Netherlands’ capital city. Those in town can see this colorful replica of the famous Dutch East India Company ship that started its maiden voyage to Batavia in 1749 in person in front of the ARCAM Amsterdam Center for Architecture and The National Maritime […]

Recap: Graphic Surgery – “Contra” @ Mini Galerie

Recently, Mini Galerie in Amsterdam put together a showing from Graphic Surgery with works staying true to their aesthetic of diagonal lines, geometric shapes and a mostly B&W color scheme. The locally-based duo (Erris Huigens and Gysbert Zijlstra) have certainly made their name on the streets with their recognizable murals but display their versatility with this exhibition entitled Contra. Take a look at more photos below as well as enjoy a video. Photo credit: Ralph Roelse (via Graffuturism).
