Studio Visits: Jonas Lund – Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

We had the chance to visit Jonas Lund’s Studio Practice project at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam on the last day of the production process. By now, the “white cube” gallery space got a full art studio makeover with paint marks and scars of art making on every wall and surface. The works produced are scattered around the space, some hanging as the accepted ones, some marked as denied, and some still waiting for evaluation by the advisory board members. We’ve also got to have a look into a 300 pages book […]

Openings: Tessar Lo – “Devices And The Virtues” @ Jaski Art Gallery

On the 27th of September, Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam introduced a new solo from Tessar Lo to their collectors and local art lovers. Devices And The Virtues is Lo’s third show with the gallery and it once again proved the strong connection and love between the artist and the city. For this show, the Toronto-based artist prepared several large canvases, some mid size ones, and a nice selection of drawings on paper that were displayed in an eye-catching cluster. Exploring and playing with his expressive, naive style, purposely minimizing his efforts, the […]

Previews: Jonas Lund – “Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

Jonas Lund is a young Swedish artist whose work is balancing between social experiments and the classic art process. The artworks he creates, such as paintings, sculpture, photography and websites, often incorporate data from his studies of art world trends and behavior. In such manner, he is currently working on an interesting project titled Studio Practice that will open at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam, on the 6th of September. For this unique project, the artist prepared a 300 page book with guidelines about what he wants to be created […]

Openings: Laser 3.14 – “Troublemakers Make The World Go Round” @ Galerie Bart (Amsterdam)

Dutch street artist Laser 3.14 (featured), opened a solo show, Troublemakers Make The World Go Round, at Galerie Bart in his hometown of Amsterdam on April 12th. Through this exhibition, the mysterious artist introduced the indoor versions of the infamous statements, thoughts and slogans that he’s been painting around the city for the last 15 years. From writings on reclaimed builder boards, to cutout metal shields, and four colorways of a new fluorescent print edition (available here), these works are his comments and observations on the state […]

Studio Visits: Laser 3.14

The work of Amsterdam’s street art man of mystery, Laser 3.14 is slowly becoming one of the recognizable elements of the Dutch capital. Along with canals, bikes, red lights and coffeeshops, his statements sprayed all over the city are something a lot of people remember from their trips. Recently, we had a chance to visit Laser 3.14 at his studio in the Jordaan area, see and hear about what he is working on, and talk about how this phenomena started. By many accounts, Laser 3.14 […]

Recap: Maurice van Tellingen – “Heimlich” @ Ron Mandos, Amsterdam

Ron Mandos Gallery in Amsterdam entered the new year with, Heimlich, a solo show by the Dutch artist Maurice van Tellingen. For this exhibition, he created new sculptural works in his familiar style, where his pieces “resemble reality just like reality resembles itself”. The works show a detached detail of an interior or exterior space, by creating and showing all the elements that come along with it – from human presence, realistic texture and details, signs of deterioration, to creating a false source of light. While previous works […]

Openings: Steve More – ‘Subtraction’ @ Unruly Gallery

Edinburgh based Steve More recently opened his solo exhibition entitled Subtraction at Amsterdam’s Unruly Gallery. More’s abstract work in his Syntax series, which has been developing over the last couple of years, takes centre stage for this exhibition of new work, and his creative process of applying and subsequently revealing layers presents a level of chaos in the background of his very controlled reductive technique. The clean geometric lines carved into the surface of the artwork present a beautiful symmetry and the perfect foil to the random nature […]

Studio Visits: Chris Berens

We had a privilege to visit Chris Berens in his new studio in Amsterdam, just after he finished his 3 new impressive works for last year’s PAN Art Fair. The studio is in an old house in the very center of Amsterdam, and is filled up with a wide selection of memorabilia, souvenirs, random objects, from old books, photographs, religious figures, vintage furniture, and medicinal glassware, to big AT-ATs in the windows. Most of the walls of the studio, especially around the isle in the middle […]
