Patricia Piccinini – “Skywhale” Hot Air Balloon

Patricia Piccinini, the subject of one of our Art Focus features earlier this year, has taken to the skies with her latest work again showcasing her love for the grotesque and her strong imagination. Studio Visit: Mark Whalen – “Maze Walkers” @ Chalk Horse (Sydney)

Mark Whalen’s new solo show, Maze Walkers, just opened at Chalk Horse in Sydney, Australia. His latest body of work displays his hand-painted gridded environments with some new stylistic directions. Working with themes of geometry, ritual, science, and sport, Whalen’s work continues to increase in complexity in both narrative and composition, but with a focused clarity that is well suited to his signature style. Upcoming: Kozyndan @ Outre Gallery (Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney)

Returning to Australia for another series of solos (like in 2011) in Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney, Kozyndan will be showing at the different locations of Outre Gallery on March 8th, March 15th, and March 22nd respectively (RSVP here). Look for new original work from the duo like their popular panoramics typically infused with local flavor, like Bathers’ Friday in the CBD (partial shot above) as well as limited edition offerings. Streets: El Mac x Shamsia Hassan (Vietnam)

Last weekend, the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial was held in Australia and with it, a new mural from El Mac was unveiled. Originally painted in Vietnam, the piece entitled Birds of No Nation was a collaboration with Shamsia Hassan, probably the only serious female graffiti writer in Afghanistan and also an associate professor in the Fine Arts Department at Kabul University. Teaser: Hush – “Sirens” @ Metro Gallery

As we mentioned in a post in March highlighting a mural from Hush (interviewed) in Melbourne, the UK-based artist has been prepping for a solo at the Metro Gallery. With the opening reception set for May 30th, Sirens will bring fans down under his special blend of East meets West imagery fused with elements of urban culture. Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “The Obliteration Room” @ Queensland Gallery of Modern Art

As part of her Look Now, See Forever exhibition (more on this later) that opened last month at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, Yayoi Kusama included an immersive installation piece that encompass an entire room dubbed The Obliteration Room. What began as a completely whited-out setting (furniture included), ended up covered by thousands of her signature dots – aided by placement of colorful stickers by children who visited the exhibition over the course of two weeks.
