Releases: Ed Templeton – “Wayward Cognitions” Book

Ed Templeton recently released his latest photography book titled Wayward Cognitions, published by Thomas Campbell’s Um Yeah Arts, showing 20 years worth of capturing street life in it’s purest, rawest form. The skateboarding legend, artist and photographer, whose books such as Teenage Smokers and Teenage Kissers influenced a whole generation of young photographers, this time published a book that isn’t capturing or  exploring a certain theme, but gives a good peek inside his extensive archives. Documenting the behind-the=scenes of skateboarding, alternative life styles, teenagers, general public, religious lunatics, homeless, drunks, and […]

Openings: Conor Harrington – “Eat And Delete” @ Lazarides Popup (New York)

Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) run in New York City included not only outdoor works (here & here), but also culminated in a riveting exhibition in SOHO. Entitled Eat and Delete, this show continued the previous themes from the Irish artist’s 2012 solo Dead Meat (covered). With 10 large-scale canvases alongside 5 unique portraits, Harringon keeps his artistic investigation going on the historic European superpowers and exposes the hypocrisy of their empire because of the status and wealth accrued through leas than savory means. The UK-based artist utilizes a unique […]

Openings: Wayne White – “Invisible Ruler” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On September 11th, AM attended the solo from Los Angeles-based artist Wayne White at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled Invisible Ruler, the new body of work includes his signature word paintings showing alongside a series on paper he created during a residency at the Rauschenberg Foundation. Completing the exhibition was a group of 15 foot kinetic sculptures, hand constructed from cardboard, highlighting his talents from a time back when he worked on production design for Pee-wee’s Playhouse from which he has won three Emmy Awards. […]

Showing: Sam Falls @ Hannah Hoffman Gallery

Now showing through October 25th at the Hannah Hoffman Gallery in Los Angeles is a new body of work from Sam Falls, whose sculptural pieces were also recently displayed MetroTech Center in Brooklyn (covered). What interests fans of this young LA-based artist with a rising star is not just the imagery he produces but his methodology behind it. For these new “paintings,” Falls gathered vegetation from his current house in Venice (palm fronds, birds of paradise), his childhood home in Vermont (ferns), and the woods around his other residence in […]

Openings: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

After a studio visit with Carl Krull, it was gratifying to see his new works displayed on the walls of V1 Gallery last week. Creating his imagery through a pattern of repetitive lines, the fresh pieces were collectively entitled Seismic and sometimes formed faces almost looking like pin art or other more complex compositions. Head over for a look if you are in around Copenhagen through October 25. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Discuss Carl Krull here.

Showing: Matzu / Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Outside Looking In” @ Lesley Kehoe Galleries

After a recent landmark showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong (covered), Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) headed to Melbourne for his next project. Outside Looking In at Lesley Kehoe Galleries is the second exhibition in their Spring Series focusing on Japanese artists living and creating in New York, making Matzu a perfect choice, especially when considering the East meets West nature of his work. The show, which runs through October 25th, features a selection of Matsuyama’s colorful and kinetic paintings as well as sculptural works which demonstrate nicely his signature aesthetic of putting a […]

Studio Visits: Jonas Lund – Studio Practice” @ Boetzelaer|Nispen

We had the chance to visit Jonas Lund’s Studio Practice project at Boetzelaer|Nispen in Amsterdam on the last day of the production process. By now, the “white cube” gallery space got a full art studio makeover with paint marks and scars of art making on every wall and surface. The works produced are scattered around the space, some hanging as the accepted ones, some marked as denied, and some still waiting for evaluation by the advisory board members. We’ve also got to have a look into a 300 pages book […]

Streets: Conor Harrington / L.I.S.A. Project (New York) – Part II

In between setting up for his popup show in New York (more on this later), Conor Harrington (interviewed) took advantage of the hospitality from the L.I.S.A. Project to leave a mark on the streets of the Big Apple (Broome & Lafayette Street). After sharing the first mural with you here, we now have shots of the second piece he was able to work on. Take a look at more in-progress photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. Discuss Conor Harrington here.

Baby Tattooville ’14: Late Night Live Painting With Rick O’Brien

Burning the midnight oil, surprise guest Rick O’Brien invited us in to see some live model painting at Baby Tattooville last night. Working his two subjects through different poses, the portrait painter loosely laid forms onto his canvas as attendees watched. Taking into account the lateness of the hour, the rumored haunted nature of this particular room at the top of the Mission Inn, and the costumed nature of the models, the session was certainly something to remember from this year’s event. See full coverage of this […]

Overtime: Sept 29 – Oct 5

More stories from the week that ended Oct 5 (click on bolded words for more information): Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada creates giant face on the mall in DC. Image credit: Matt McClain/The Washington Post. RIP: Walter Josef Fischer, aka Oz, who was killed by a subway train at the age of 64. Unrest in Hong Kong could negatively (or positively?) affect Sotheby’s and Christie’s auctions in the region. Art inspired by the protest movement. Former staff members of Corcoran Gallery of Art hold a funeral for the […]
