Openings: Lola’s Natural Beauties and Superschool @ Copro Gallery

“Natural Beauties” and “Superschool” (previewed) opened at Copro Gallery this past Saturday, March 7th. Upon entering Copro Gallery, you will see Lola’s solo show “Natural Beauties” on display in the room directly ahead. At the other wing of the gallery you will find “Superschool”, a group exhibition curated by Lola.Â The two shows are on display until March 28th. Critically acclaimed art star, Ryan McGinness, opened up his first solo show in three years at Dietch ProjectsÂ last weekend. The show was packed with people anxious see what his stunning new body of work looked like.Â Using images, icons, and contemporary signals/signs, Ryan’s complex works are created using an intricate silkscreening process. Last night AM attended the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) “Glancing at Twin Peaks” (previewed) opening at Joshua Liner Gallery. The highly anticipated opening for Matzu’s NYC solo drew a packed house. Matzu’s distinctly unique pieces exhibited his signature contemporary flair on traditional subjects. This show continued his use of bold color palettes and contrasting “splashes” that make the pieces leap out at the audience. It seems that KAWS mania is not only limited to the United States. Kehinde Wiley Getty Lecture / Roberts & Tilton Show

Kehinde Wiley will be speaking on April 2nd at the Getty Center (tickets here) about his work and latest World Stage project – Brazil. Recently, it has been his habit to move to different countries and immerse himself with the culture and location while painting a body of work. Wiley will be exhibiting his signature urban African-American subjects posing in traditional art portraits at Roberts & Tilton, opening on April 4. Via Artdaily.

Nara Arrested For Graffiti Before Boesky Opening

Yoshitomo Nara decided to big up his street cred before his Marianne Boesky opening by putting up some graffiti at the Union Square subway station in NY. Unfortunately, since the arrest of Shepard Fairey before his opening at the Boston ICA, throwing prominent artists in jail seems to have become all the rage.
