Matzu and Joshua Liner Gallery were nice enough to invite AM for a sneak “peak” at Matzu’s full-gallery solo show, Glancing at the Twin Peaks, opening in NYC this Friday. Matzu and his helpers have been working around the clock to transform the space with paintings, murals and sculptures into one cohesive installation. Fresh off his LA show last December (covered), Yoshitomo Nara will be opening an exhibition tomorrow night (6-8 pm) at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. It sounds like a fantastic show as Nara will be showing new paintings and drawings as well as more large-scale sculptures with his collaborative group YNG. The structures are described as “two immense sculptures that recall stylized tannenbaums, with their roof shingling evoking exaggerated tree needles. BMW Art Cars & LACMA Roundup

We stopped by the LACMA with some out-of-town visitors last weekend and were pleasantly surprised to see some old-school custom car collaborations between BMW and some familiar names. What’s that saying… “so old, it’s new?” The Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol painted BMW Art Cars, a series starting in the 70’s, will be on display in the BP Grand Entrance and can be seen free of admission. Fans came out by the hundreds and waited for hours in a line that stretched down La Cienega Blvd. to check out artist and designer KAWS’ latest solo exhibition entitled, “The Long Way Home,” which opened last night at Honor Fraser. Josh Keyes recently revealed two new paintings he has completed entitled “Flutter” and “Scorch.” With his participation in the SCOPE NY art fair (which AM will cover) in March and his upcoming solo in May at David B. Smith Gallery, we suspect these will make their appearance at one of these venues. With his predilection for creating works in series, look for him to explore these themes a little more as he fleshes out his new body of work. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

KAWS x Royal/T Party and Art Exhibition

On the eve before his solo show at Honor Fraser, KAWS kicked things off with, “I Can’t Feel My Face,” a VIP party and art exhibition at Culver City’s Japanese-style maid cafe Royal/T. Christie’s will be auctioning off the eclectic collection of the late Yves Saint Laurent next week starting Feb 23rd. The incredible collection of nearly 700 artworks were accumulated over decades by Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre BergÃ© valued at up to $425 million including Old Master drawings, Roman sculptures, Renaissance bronzes and works by Ingres, GÃ©ricault, Frans Hals, Picasso, Matisse, Braque, LÃ©ger and Mondrian. Â AM had the chance to stop by Joshua Liner GalleryÂ to check out two great shows: Unexpected Occurrences by Oliver VernonÂ and Unfinished Business by CrashÂ (previewed). Both of these artists took us by surprise with their unique styles.
