Second Helpings of AM for Thanksgiving

It has been a wonderful few months for us since AM launched in September, so we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and thank our readers for your continued support. We’ve covered so much great art in our first few months, we thought that it might be a good time to recap some of our favorite stories so far. From Audrey Kawasaki to Kaws, Shepard Fairey to Baby Tattooville, Mark Ryden to Josh Keyes, Takashi Murakami to Greg Simkins, […]

Teaser: Jeff Soto x Modus Films x Arrested Motion

Here is a little teaser video for the project we are working on with the good people at Modus Films. It’s a mini-documentary on Jeff Soto and his first ever museum show. The exhibit is entitled “Turning in Circles” (teased) and will open on December 13th at the Riverside Art Museum. Stopped by yesterday to take a look at the installation – it will be epic. AM will have a preview for you in the next several days as well as more surprises.

Openings: Kuksi & Rocha @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The frigid gusting wind on Manhattan’s west side did nothing to discourage an art-hungry crowd from attending Saturday evening’s Kris Kuksi and Pat Rocha openings at Joshua Liner Gallery. As mentioned in our preview, Kuksi’s work really needs to been seen in person to be believed. Each piece is obsessively constructed of hundreds upon hundreds of individual parts to form a frightening yet beautiful world of men and monsters. And with some works measuring over 10 feet in length, one could spend hours and hours […]

Aakash Nihalani

Recently saw the work of New York artist Aakash Nihilani and thought his simple concept was quite fresh and interesting. His work includes tape installations on the streets as well as canvas pieces. 17 Frost and Bose Pacia hosted an event today in Williamsburg, where you could meet Nihalani and perhaps see some of his impromptu tape work. If you missed this, his show “Extended” will be showing to the public next Saturday, the 29th. The gallery is located at 17 Frost Street (between Union […]

Preview: Kuksi & Rocha @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Opening shows tomorrow at Joshua Liner Gallery are two artists whose work couldn’t be more different, yet are interesting in their own way. In Gallery I, Kris Kuksi’s Imminent Utopia showcases his intricate mixed-media assemblages made from “model kits, injection-molded toy soldiers and animals, plastic skulls, knick-knack figurines, and mechanical parts.” The size and detail of some of these works have to be seen in person to be believed – AM will be bringing you opening pics, which should give you more of an idea […]

Preview/Interviews: Shag @ Jonathan Levine

Shag is at it again… this time he’s living it up in the Big Apple. Fresh from his recent Baby Tattooville retreat where AM met him, JoSH AGle (aka: SHAG) has a hip new show at Jonathan Levine. (Nov 22nd – Dec 20th) This time, Shag is giving us an official “peep” at the elegant beauties and chic lifestyles for the aptly named theme: Voyeur. This is sort of an introspective show for Shag, for he was once a Voyeur; which led the way for […]

Kaws x Kanye West

Artists collaborating on album covers is not a new phenomenom, but here is an interesting one from Kanye West that was done by Kaws. This one apparently is only for the iTunes release.  If this is true, then the only place you would see the album cover would be in your Ipod or music players.  Shows what a powerhouse iTunes and downloads have become if money is spent exclusively for the online release.  Not sure why Kanye wouldn’t use the same cover for the hard […]

Openings: Chloe Early @ Stolenspace

A fast rising star in the UK art scene, Chloe Early opened her solo show Ladies and Gentleman We Are Spinning in Space this weekend at StolenSpace Gallery in London. Chloe’s fantastical works provide a window into a blended world where abstract meets architectural backdrops. Using linen or aluminum mediums, Chloe weaves environments where reality/fantasy, urban/jungle converge and intertwine. Her pieces often use a human (often a diver) to work in parallel with the world it inhabits to create her dreamy snapshots. This body of work […]

Openings: Clowns! @ Corey Helford Gallery

The Clowns! (previewed) show opened last night in Culver City and AM contributor Marcus was on hand to snap some photos. This group show had a pretty unique and strong lineup as Corey Helford teamed up with Stolenspace (UK) to exhibit artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Photos of all the work after the jump.

Teaser: This is China @ BLVD Gallery

“This is China” is a show organized by Red Star Press that is opening next month in Seattle featuring urban and graffiti artists from China including 0528, Steel Dan, Soos, Cui Nan, Ha Shiyou, Zhang Qitian, Popil, Shen Jingdong, and Yang Jun.  “Graffiti is considered a serious crime in China, and violators incur harsh penalties from the government. Ironically, the Chinese government recently commissioned a number of public graffiti pieces during the 2008 Olympics to portray positive messages about China and the Olympic games. Local […]
