Openings: Dan Baldwin – “Fragile” @ Gallery 8

British artist Dan Baldwin just opened a new solo show titled Fragile at Gallery 8 (8 Duke Street, London SW1Y 6BN) in London, exploring the concepts of mortality and beauty. The theme of fragility has long been associated with Baldwin’s work, not only in its commentary upon the temporality of life but also in the delicate materials he uses. Encompassing ceramics, silkscreen prints, resin, acrylics, spray paint and found objects, the artist’s mixed media compositions are crafted with precision, resulting in complex and intricate pieces. To coincide with the exhibition, CCA Galleries […]

Previews: ‘Modern Fabulists’ @ View Gallery, Bristol

Coming to Bristol this week is Modern Fabulists – a group exhibition curated by our friends Chippy Coates and Richard Scarry, aka Coates & Scarry. You’ll know Richard as being the director of Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, who of course curated the 2010 Art from the New World exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. View Gallery hosts Modern Fabulists, which as the title suggests, thematically deals with folkloric storytelling though the eyes and minds of contemporary artists. Expect some narrative heavy work […]

Openings: ‘Mixed Doubles’ @ Signal Gallery

AM attended our first opening at Signal Gallery’s new and much larger space for their Mixed Doubles group exhibition last week. John Squire was probably the first artist we ever collected from ‘art prints’ from back in the late 80’s when he produced Pollack-esque cover art for his band The Stone Roses. We collected the band’s limited 12 inch records (and still have them) with the limited art prints included in the package. Fast forward to 2011 and Squire is still working within the realm […]

Preview: Dan Baldwin – “Works on Paper” @ Ink_d Gallery (Brighton)

Dan Baldwin (interviewed) has been keeping busy since AM last caught up with him at his London solo show with Signal Gallery. This Thursday, October 28th, sees the artist open his latest series of works at Ink_d Gallery in Brighton. Simply entitled “Works on Paper”, this exhibition collects together a series of 12 new works plus a series of 10 screen-prints with individually worked 3D elements. From what Dan tells us of the actual installation of the work, a bold setting is to be expected. […]

Openings / Giveaway: Dan Baldwin – “A New Life” @ Signal Gallery

Dan Baldwin’s solo, “A New Life”, recently opened at Signal Gallery, and AM stopped by to take a look at the new work on show. Dan’s new collection of paintings brings a more subtle and controlled approach to his work, triggered, in his words, by a change of surroundings from the city to the countryside and also his impending fatherhood (Baldwin Jr. attended the opening in utero!). There still are the typical chaotic Baldwin moments within the compositions, but he seems to have tamed the […]

Preview: Dan Baldwin – “A New Life” @ Signal Gallery

Dan Baldwin (interviewed) is currently putting the finishing touches to a new body of work set to be shown next month at Signal Gallery in London. “A New Life” opens on Thursday, July 1st and looks to reflect upon recent changes in the UK artist’s personal circumstances, such as a change of location and also the great tamer that is fatherhood. Dan describes his new work as “Mozart fighting Motorhead” with his approach to the work coming from a more delicate place and evolving organically […]

Update: Dan Baldwin Collaborations

The worlds of art and fashion design often collide, and it seems that Dan Baldwin’s (interviewed) multi-layered textures are soon to make it onto the clothing racks of London’s well-heeled fashionistas. Dan is no stranger to working in different mediums, and we think that his art fits pretty well on these silk linings and fabrics used in collaboration with British fashion designer Sara Berman on her upcoming 2010 autumn collection. Speaking of Baldwin’s artistic collaborations, Dan and Hush (interviewed) just released two super-limited edition prints from the recent […]

Openings: “Don’t believe the Type” @ Zero Cool

As we mentioned recently in our dual interview with Hush and Dan Baldwin, their collaborative pieces were part of a group show “Don’t Believe the Type” that opened several nights ago at Zero Cool Gallery. Also on display were works from artists like Asbestos, Copyright, Ben Frost, Meggs, Pure Evil, T.WAT and many more.  Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Dual Artist Interview: Hush x Dan Baldwin Collaboration Show @ Zero Cool Gallery

Our friends at Zero Cool gallery will be opening a new group show entitled “Don’t believe the Type” tonight in London that will feature four large scale collaboration paintings by Hush (interviewed) and Dan Baldwin (interviewed). The artists have not worked together in the past, but when AM heard that they would be pooling talents, we thought that this could be something special. Each started work on two pieces and when they finished their elements, the paintings were traded over for the other’s work. You […]

Interviews/Preview: Dan Baldwin – “Disillusion” @ Carmichael Gallery

Over the past few years Dan Baldwin has established himself as one of the notable artists in the UK’s new contemporary art scene. A distinct voice in a landscape full of artists whose works are often too similar to distinguish, Dan has proven himself to be fresh and somewhat unique. It’s great to see him traveling to the US for his first solo exhibition, “Disillusion,” opening Thursday, September 10 at Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles. AM sat down for a chat with the man himself. […]
