For Art Basel in Switzerland coming up in June, Daniel Arsham will be presenting his signature “fictional archeology” to fans and collectors in Basel with a twist. While mainly working in black and white in the past due in part to his colorblindness, the Brooklyn-based artist received specially made lenses that corrected this problem last year and has recently been experimenting with works in color. Daniel Arsham currently has on display his first solo presentation in Japan at Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo, also his second in Asia following his show at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong last autumn (covered). Titled My First Show in Japan, Year 2044, the exhibition introduces his signature concept of “Fictional Archaeology” to local art lovers. Another strong satellite fair seen during this year’s Basel Week Miami was certainly Untitled. Showing a diverse selection of contemporary works, the roster included 119 international galleries, not-for-profit exhibition spaces and institutions from over 20 countries. On the 1st of December, YoungArts Foundation hosted a book release, signing, and exhibition by Daniel Arsham, one of the events surrounding Basel Week Miami. Fictional Archaeology is the NY-based artist’s latest book with the first copies signed and sold to visitors of his current show in Miami, The Future Was Written. Including some 2,000 chalk objects, typical Arsham future artifacts, this interactive exhibition invites visitors to use them to leave their own cave drawings or hieroglyphics. Tomorrow (September 24), as part of YoungArts Awareness Day, sculptor Daniel Arsham has prepared a special interactive event in Miami. Similar to his current exhibition in Hong Kong (covered), the Brooklyn-based artist will have an installation of his “future relics” on display, with nearly 2,000 objects made of chalk that visitors can use to draw or write their impressions of the future. Last week in Hong Kong, Daniel Arsham opened a new solo show entitled Fictional Archeology at Galerie Perrotin. Included were eroded sculptures featuring the human form inspired by the mummified remains from the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79 A.D, a contemporary look at how we may appear in the event of a similar disaster to future archeologists. Rounding out the show was a smaller version the installation seen last year in Miami (covered), a “future archaeological dig site” of modern day items like shoes, cameras, musical instruments, and phones made from chalk. After installing a whimsical new installation in Washington DC with his Snarkitechture firm, Daniel Arsham has turned his attention to a more solo pursuit. Fictional Archeology sees the New York-based artist bring his signature technique of creating everyday objects as how they would appear if found by archeologists in the future to the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin on September 11th. For those who have a chance to visit Washington DC through September 7th, make sure you stop by the National Building Museum to check out an immersive installation from Snarkitecture. Cofounders Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham have imagined up a beach with an ocean of 750,000 recyclable plastic balls. The monochromatic and minimalistic installation certainly mirrors the aesthetic seen in many of their previous projects and is certainly something visitors of all ages will enjoy. American artist Daniel Arsham is presenting the third installment of his Future Relics series at the 68th Film Festival in Cannes. The short film features actress Juliette Lewis. In parallel to the screening, an exhibition entitled Future Relic 3 on display at the Club Albane at the Marriott, presenting relic items from the film industry era including film camera, microphones to videotapes all recreated in Arsham’s signature technique.
