Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Over the weekend, the Library Street Collective hosted the opening for a new show from Cleon Peterson in Detroit. Poison features new paintings featuring nightmarish scenes of violence and gore, nothing new to fans of the former assistant to Shepard Fairey. What is new though are the sculptural editions that Peterson has included in the new body of work, a natural next step to bringing his provocative imagery to life. Photo credit: Sal Rodriguez. Provocative painter Cleon Peterson has worked with the Library Street Collective before like during last year’s Art Basel Week in Miami (covered). Their new collaborative effort, a show entitled Poison, will be opening on August 29 at the LSC gallery space in Detroit and will no doubt feature more powerful and barbaric imagery from the former assistant to Shepard Fairey, drawing from his experiences and dark past. Shepard Fairey Arrested In Los Angeles

News broke yesterday that Shepard Fairey (featured) was arrested in Los Angeles as he returned from Europe where he just opened an exhibition at the CAC Malaga (more on this later). He was charged with a felony after he allegedly vandalized Detroit properties while in town for his showing at the Library Street Collective (covered). He has since been released but will have to face charges at a later date of “defacing” 14 different locations in the city, in contrast to legal murals like the one seen above on the water […]

Opening last month and showing through the middle of August is Shepard Fairey’s (featured) solo at the Library Street Collective in Detroit. Entitled Printed Matters, the exhibition featured a diverse collection of the Los Angeles-based artist’s distinctive work across all mediums. As we reported last week, Shepard Fairey (featured) was well on his way to completing his tallest mural to date standing at 180′ x 60′. Featuring a simple but iconic image and pattern, the massive piece will be Shep’s gift to Detroit along with some smaller murals in the Belt series of permanent pieces for the Library Street Collective, where he has solo currently showing (more on this later). Shortly after opening his successful solo show in LA (covered), Aryz visited Detroit where he painted a new mural. Invited over by the Library Street Collective, the recently finished wall from the Spanish artist was for their Public Matter series. For this piece, Aryz picked his figurative, portraiture style of works and painted this unique sequenced piece. In a similar aesthetic as some of the paintings from his gallery show, this mural is his way of applying painterly skills on a massive scale, which he executed quite nicely. By […]

As mentioned, this Friday night, May 22nd, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be opening his solo entitled Printed Matters at Library Street Collective in Detroit. As you can see from the photos here, Mr. Obey has already made his way to the Motor City where he is hard at work putting the finishing touches on pieces for the exhibition. On June 6th, Inner State Gallery will be opening a new group show in Detroit entitled LAX / DTW. On May 22nd, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be returning to Detroit for the first time in over a decade for a solo at Library Street Collective. Printed Matters is a continuous series of exhibitions which focuses on the importance of printed material in the Los Angeles-based artist’s oeuvre. Shortly after opening his solo show at Robert Fontaine Gallery in Miami, Anthony Lister (filmed) stopped in Detroit to paint this large mural with the help of 1xRun and Inner State Gallery. Stepping away from traditional spray paint or common aesthetics see in street art, the Australian artist finished this 100 foot long piece as a great example of his expressive and unique style.
