Showing: Jacob Hashimoto – “Gas Giant” @ MOCA

After providing you with a sneak peak setup look at Jacob Hashimoto’s MOCA Pacific Design Center installation, we are happy to be able to share images of the finished Gas Giant exhibition. The massive work seemingly alters the cube-like interior space of the PDC venue into a immersive, sublime, and otherworldly experience. Using traditional kite-making techniques and thousands of thin paper sheets attached to supports and string, the artist painstakingly collages the components into a sculptural environment whose whole definitely exceeds the sum of it […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Figure Drawings” @ Pace Prints

Ryan McGinness is back at Pace Prints after a seven year hiatus, but to say he’s been busy since would be an understatement. The New York-based artist, whose work stems primarily from skate and design culture has gone on to massive acclaim in that seven year stint, from further exploring his skate influences with the MOMA to his explosive show in the last days of Deitch Projects and let’s not forget all the projects in between. His latest solo show, humbly titled Figure Drawing, is way beyond just that, and without question continues to […]

The Opera Gallery in New York is set to open a solo show from Lori Earley on June 7th marking her successful return after a long hiatus. Entitled The Devil’s Pantomime, her largest exhibition to date featuring 34 new paintings comprises of surreal portraits of her characteristic females. We talk to her about a reason why her women may look the way they do, her struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and more in the interview below. Check out the Q&A’s as well as preview images and make plans to […]

Os Gemeos 737 Boeing

After painting a whole train back in 2011, Brazilian brothers and legendary graffiti artists, Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo aka Os Gemeos, recently raised the bar even further. In collaboration with the Brazilian national football team, and GOL Airlines, they painted the whole 737 Boeing that will carry their national team and personnel during the World Cup. Known for their fast work, practiced over the years while working on the streets of Sao Paolo, the twins completed this monumental piece in one week only, using 1200 cans […]

Openings: “Art Truancy – Celebrating 20 Years of Juxtapoz Magazine” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The year was 1994, Pulp Fiction was ruling the box office, The Beastie Boys were blasting Sabotage and a group of artists out in sunny California were brainstorming on how to start a Kustom Kulture magazine, that (unbeknownst to them) would eventually go on to be the most widely distributed and influential art magazine in the world. Famed painter Robert Williams (originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico) was riding a California wave, while collaborator, Fausto Vitello, was ripping with his Thrasher Magazine success, and with some key […]

Streets: Etam Cru (Italy)

Sainer & Bezt, the only two members of the Etam Cru, recently visited Italy right after opening their solo show in Barcelona (covered). The Polish art duo stopped in Gaeta, where they created this large mural for the ongoing Memorie Urbane festival. This time, the two put aside their darker surrealist concepts, and did this playful piece showing a little boy selling his toys, symbolizing the end of childhood and entry into the world of grownups. This large wall includes some of their familiar elements such as floral patterns, […]

Openings: Walton Ford – “Watercolors” @ Paul Kasmin

The last time we were able to experience Walton Ford’s work in person in New York was in 2011 when he blew us away with his surreal portraits of King Kong as well as his well known naturalistic paintings. This time around, the American artist’s return to Paul Kasmin Gallery featured large scale watercolors of his chosen creatures in unusual and and ironically unnatural urban and outdoor settings. As per his usual practice, the pieces were embellished with notes, but for the first time included musings from the […]

Interviews: Carl Cashman – “Neometry: New work by Carl Cashman” @ Prescription Art

After almost a year since his sell out solo show in US (covered), Carl Cashman is currently finalizing works for his UK solo debut at Prescription Art Gallery in Brighton on the 6th of June. Titled Neometry: New work by Carl Cashman, the show will be introducing brand new geometric-based works made with primarily neon colors, as a part of his ongoing Op-Art works series. For this show, the British artist decided to further explore his distinctive style and concept, creating new patterns and incorporating it on […]

Openings: Ai Yamaguchi – “Shinchishirin” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

As it had been 12 years since Ai Yamaguchi’s last solo exhibition in New York City, the level of expectation and excitement for her return was understandably high. Even so, Shinchishirin at the Joshua Liner Gallery, which opened May 8th, far exceeds those high expectations, and is arguably one of the artist’s finest bodies of work to date. The imagery in the show is instantly recognizable as Yamaguchi, with her characteristic Edo-era courtesans depicted in a style which is at once based in traditional Japanese […]

Opening: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “Good Knight” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery unveiled the latest solo show, titled Good Knight, by artist Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured). Just as his previous show a year ago (covered), this new body of work from the gifted painter brought in a massive crowd (including both fans and established artists like Laurie Lipton, Saber & Dabs Myla) eager to see his latest display of surreal and fantastical imagery. It’s safe to say that his work keeps getting better as time progresses with this exhibition displaying a variety of large and small […]
