Art Focus: Willy Verginer

For your Memorial Day Weekend perusal, we have this week’s Art Focus on sculptor Willy Verginer. The intricate works from the Italian artist are carved usually from a single piece of wood featuring people interacting with inanimate objects or animals in some interesting positions. Often the pieces are accented by ornate floral elements or segmented colors lending them a sense of whimsy. Via Beautiful Decay.  Photos via Galerie Majke Husstege & Arch|dez|art. Detroit Beautification Project

A project that was first hinted at here appears to have come to fruition in the Motor City. We have already shared works from Sever and Reyes for the Detroit Beautification Project, but now we have a closer look at the multitude of artists (many of them MSK affiliated) and the murals they painted centered mostly in Hamtramck. Update: Dalek

Judging from this new ink piece from James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed), he hasn’t completely killed off his space monkeys yet. Of course, his more abstract work also continues with an update of a mural he painted at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar, a completely new piece really. For those who still haven’t gotten enough after perusing the in-progress pics below, you can check out a video of the creation of the mural here. Discuss Dalek here.

Streets: ROA (Vienna)

After a showing last August at INOPERAbLE in Vienna, ROA has been invited back by the gallery to paint a massive 23 m wall in the city center. The Belgium anatomical street specialist decided to render a beautiful collage of local birdlife on a wall in the 9th district that dwarfed the mural he painted at the showspace last time. Discuss ROA here.

Streets: Mike Stilkey – ‘The Zoo Drop’ Mural @ The Standard (DTLA)

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]
