Art Focus: Sharon Moody

This week’s Art Focus sets its sights on Washington, D.C – based Sharon Moody and her gorgeous and photorealistic comic book paintings. Moody, who is also employed as a graphic designer, has been a teacher at Georgetown University since 1998, including instructing in courses of drawing, painting, design, and technical art history. This particular series of works have been labelled her trompe l’oeil paintings, which play with deceiving the eye and convincing the viewer that objects depicted in art appear in three dimensions. Next Monday, May 21st in Tucson, the newest exhibition from Josh Keyes will be open for public enjoyment at the Joseph Gross Gallery. The showing at the University of Arizona will be the first solo for the Portland-based painter at an academic associated gallery and as such he will be displaying a selection of old and new work which could be instructive on how artistic style changes and develops over time. Streets: Banksy (London)

A statement on child labour in the UK has appeared on the side of Poundland on Whymark Avenue in London with an underaged worker hard at work with a sewing machine creating some bunting (perhaps for the upcoming Queen’s Jubilee?). Although not confirmed as of yet by Banksy, the stenciling and style are all strongly reminiscent of Mr. B’s handiwork. Photo credit: the lonely villein.

In anticipation for this year’s Art Hong Kong, we bring you a special studio visit to Pace Print’s Manhattan studios. For the fair opening on the 17th, Pace will be unveiling a special edition woodcut print created in collaboration with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Unlike our recent trip to Pace’s Brooklyn studio with Shepard Fairey where experimental techniques were explored, this Manhattan location serves up a different set of traditional tools which were utilized by the blue chip Japanese artist. After coming off an impressive exhibition at Lebasse Projects (covered) where he showed his versatility by focusing on sculptural works, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) decided to try something new in his artistic career and go large scale (see in progress pics here). The motor city has become one of the hotspots for street activity recently as the tanking economy has ironically led to more abandoned buildings facilitating the rise of public art.
