On the 19th of February, Galleria Varsi in Rome opened a solo show by Italian street artist Pixelpancho. For Androidèi, the Turin-born artist transformed the entire gallery into a setting of one of his familiar works. Known for large murals that incorporate elements of his country’s rich history combined with vintage, futuristic, and even steampunk elements, Pixelpancho approached installing this show in a similar manner. We’ve seen Pejac paint large indoor murals, small street pieces, window drawings, install sculptural works in public, create visual illusions on facades and walls, but we never seen him turn his paintings into reality. With Chinese New Year coming up on Monday, interTrend in Long Beach has teamed up with James Jean (interviewed) for an interactive installation to celebrate the occasion. The project centers around the red envelopes given out around the holidays by families for good luck. In this case, they have been secured to the front of the company’s building (228 E. Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015). On January 9th, Tauba Auerbach returned to Paula Cooper Gallery in New York for a brand new exhibition. Entitled Projective Instrument, the show plays off the 1915 treatise Projective Ornament by the American architect & theosopher Claude Bragdon in which the author outlines a system for drawing four-dimensional ornament on a two-dimensional plane. Building upon this century old thesis, Auerbach further empowers projective geometry and recasts the “Ornament” as “Instrument,” thereby rendering it an active tool rather than mere representation. In July 2015, Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei finally got his passport back four years after Chinese authorities seized it preventing him from leaving the country. In recent months, he’s been traveling around Europe, from UK to Greece, where he visited the refugee camp on Lesbos and set up a studio there. Currently he is Paris, working on an upcoming exhibition at Le Bon Marché, an upscale department store.
