Video: JR x Liu Bolin Collaboration (NY)

Last month, we brought you some photos (here & here) from the JR (featured) and Liu Bolin collaboration in New York. For fans out there who want to see more of this complex project, the people at RHC have put together a nice video documenting the entire process from start to finish. For those in NYC, you may want to check out Liu Bolin’s show at Eli Klein (covered) after stopping by the mural. Discuss JR here. Discuss Liu Bolin here.

Openings: Liu Bolin – “Lost In Art” @ Eli Klein

Following a successful and complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR, Liu Bolin also recently unveiled a new series of photos at Eli Klein in Soho. The much anticipated return of Liu to the Big Apple was actually to show work from the photoshoots he conducted during his 2010 trip to NYC as well as his publicized collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar and fashion icons Gaultier, Lanvin, Missoni and Valentino. The packed house was filled with art and fashion enthusiasts looking to find the […]

Streets: JR x Liu Bolin (Part II)

Yesterday, we gave you an inside look at the collaborative project between Liu Bolin and JR (featured). During the first part of the day, the French artist wheat-pasted up a beautiful photo mural of the Liu. Now, we get to see Chinese artist return the favor and camouflage JR into his own art with his signature touch. To accomplish this, JR changed into a custom outfit with specially marked grids, which helps “pixelate” the painted sections for Liu Bolin and his assistants to focus on. After quickly […]

Streets: JR x Liu Bolin (Part I)

In preparation for his upcoming show at Eli Klein Fine Art, Beijing-based artist Liu Bolin was in town to once again hit up New York. This time, he collaborated on a unique project with his friend and fellow photographer JR (featured). AM was invited to catch this event where JR shot and created a mural of Bolin on the corner of Elizabeth & Spring St. The first part of the day JR & crew did what they do best and wheatpasted a photo of the Chinese artist front […]

Liu Bolin for Harper’s Bazaar

As we saw for ourselves when we spent some time with Liu Bolin in New York, his creative process is fascinating to say the least. It looks like we aren’t the only ones that feel that way as the Chinese photographer was recently commissioned by Harper’s Bazaar to work on a fashion shoot with them. The concept was to “camouflage” the designers of major fashion brands with his signature technique in photos where they were painted to blend into a background of their clothing. More photos […]

Creative Process: Liu Bolin

While Chinese artist Liu Bolin was in New York last summer, AM had the chance to attend his show at Eli Klein Fine Art (covered) as well as hang out with him in the streets as he was working on an in situ 9/11 tribute piece. For those as fascinated as we are with his work, photographer Zachary Bako has spent much time documenting the photographer at work including the session you see above that uniquely does not involve the artist himself as the centerpiece. Check out […]

Openings: Liu Bolin @ Eli Klein Fine Art (NY)

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Chinese artist Liu Bolin’s. For his first solo in New York, Liu took the city by the horns as he made the most of the past few weeks with his signature self paint & photography sessions by continuing his iconic Hiding In The City series at some of the Big Apple’s most unique locations such as the 9/11 tribute and Bowery & Houston Mural. The special opening at Eli Klein Fine Art was packed from the beginning as fans […]

Streets: Liu Bolin – Hiding In New York: Tiles For America

Earlier this week, Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bolin continued his Hiding In New York series (previous location) on Greenwich Street at the the Tiles For America site dedicated to 9/11. AM was on hand to capture the session as the iron willed artist literally stood on the same spot for hours on end as assistants meticulously painted him into the somber backdrop of tiles representing victims of 9/11 hung on a chain-linked fence – quite a artistic statement for the artist who will open his […]

Liu Bolin x Kenny Scharf Houston Mural

When we broke news of Liu Bolin new solo at Eli Klein Fine Art back in May, we also mentioned that the Beijing-based artist would be taking advantage of his time in New York to create a Hiding In New York series of works to be released later in the fall. Well, it looks like “The Invisible Man” has touched down ahead the June 29th show opening for a photo session in front of Kenny Scharf’s (interviewed) now famous Houston & Bowery mural. Kenny also stopped by to lend […]
