Upcoming: Joram Roukes – “The Great Beyond” @ StolenSpace

Coming up on May 21st, Joram Roukes will be opening a solo at StolenSpace in London witha new body of work entitled The Great Beyond. The fresh series of surreal oil paintings explores ideas of exploration and escapism, perhaps inspired by the move by the Dutch artist from the Netherlands to Los Angeles in 2013. His style is almost collage-like with complex layers and juxtaposed composition, drawing viewers in with their own interpretations. Discuss Joram Roukes here.

StolenSpace is currently presenting a duo show with British artist Ben Turnbull and Spanish illustrative artist Ramon Maiden through May 15th. A self taught artist with a U.S. obsession, Turnbull learned his skill working with craftsmen and artisans. Back in 2006, the various firearms he produced encased in facsimiles of red fire alarm boxes bearing ‘In Emergency Break Glass’ were featured at the Banksy Santa’s Ghetto. After showing at Lisbon’s Electricity Museum / EDP Foundation (covered) and in Paris (covered) over the last year, multidisciplinary Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils returned to London for a new solo entitled Dissonance at Lazarides Rathbone. Running until April 23rd, the exhibition reflects on how various factors in the contemporary urbanized world shapes its inhabitants, while personal identities are vanishing under the visual noise and surrounding clutter. Reflecting this, the subjects being portrayed in the pieces disappear through multiple layering of billboards and stratification on metal and wood. Check out images from the opening below. Pixel Pancho just launched his first solo exhibition in London at StolenSpace entitled Memory of Life. Streets: Phlegm (London)

Phlegm recently spent several days on a cherry picker in East London, painting a large wall near Old Street with generous help from Red Market and AltLondon. The finished piece is features one of his gigantic characters, cramped inside a typical English house, and includes a cool little nod to Banksy since it’s created on the same wall where the TV Out of the Window piece was painted. Alex Chinneck – “Pick Yourself Up and Pull Yourself Together”

British artist Alex Chinneck has put together another mindbending installation a little different than the modified structures we have seen from him before (see melting & upside-down house). Created in a car park at London’s Southbank Centre, the piece features what appears to be a peeling away asphalt surface with a car still on top of it but upside down. Having painted over a hundred murals in Tehran, Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo recently made his debut London show.
