Viewpoints / Recap: Dran – ‘Public Execution’ pop up show in Soho, London (Part II)

AM recently covered the opening and first week of the last show by Dran, which was hosted by Pictures On Walls and closed on Saturday 21 February. The uniqueness of Public Execution is that it was produced by the artist — bit by bit and in public view — over the course of its duration. A white space filled with spraypainted images of blank canvases on Day 1 evolved into a picture-rich multicoloured venue on Day 17, the grand finale. Some visitors have referred to […]

Showing: Borondo – “Animal” @ Rex Romae

Gonzalo Borondo’s Animal recently opened on the 5th of February at London’s Newcastle Project Space in Shoreditch, and is now in its final week. Closing on the 26th of February, this elaborate show presented by Rex Romae is a worthy visit for all the street and urban art fans. For this well formulated and executed show, the Spanish artist created eight thematic spaces which work great individually, as well as a whole. These included a cluster of small pieces on glass, large paintings, a haystack installation, glass works with […]

Viewpoints / Openings: Dran — ‘Public Execution’ pop-up show in Soho, London

It’s been some time since Pictures On Walls has organised an art exhibition. The previous one was in December 2013 with the Shok-1 solo show, X-Rainbow. Last year, POW gave up its premises on Commercial Street in East London. With a permanent show space no longer retained, the number of print releases in 2014 restricted to a small handful (by Paul Insect, Maya Hayuk and Invader), and plenty of competitors arriving on the street art scene eager to fill the void, many wondered what the […]

Upcoming: Mehdi Ghadyanloo – “Perception” @ Howard Griffin Gallery

On February 26th, Howard Griffin Gallery will be opening another worthy show in London featuring the art of Mehdi Ghadyanloo. Entitled Perception, the exhibition will explore the darker side of the Iranian artist’s work, when compared to the public murals he has been known for which are sponsored by Tehran’s Beautification Bureau. The new paintings will also feature the optical illusions and geometrical forms which are present in the 100 murals that he has been responsible for which have become part of the visual landscape of contemporary Tehran. Rounding out […]

Upcoming: Antony Micallef – “Self” @ Lazarides Rathbone

On February 13th (private view on the 12th), the postponed show that we mentioned last year from Antony Micallef will open at Lazarides Rathbone. Now entitled Self, the exhibition will be the first from talented painter with the London showspace since 2012. The new body of work turns his artistic focus on himself with a series of self portraits, something he has done for the last 20 years but it seems never so visceral and honest. Micallef further states – “I’m trying to create a sensual body that emanates […]

Set up at the London Newcastle Project Space in Shoreditch, Animal is shaping up to be his most ambitious display to date that will be on view through the 26th of February. Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Moment of Impact” @ Lazarides Rathbone

Last week, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) premiered his debut solo show with Lazarides Rathbone entitled Moment of Impact. For his fans in London, the American artist has assembled a selection of provocative mixed media canvases and hyper-realist sculptures. Some pieces like his masked full-size figures are direct translations of his street interventions while others are produced for the gallery setting like the leg which seems to be bursting through a canvas or arms committing seppuku. Previews: Greg Eason & Anouk Mercier – ‘CLASSIC/ LUXURY / EXOTIC/ ROMANCE (C/L/E/R)’ @ Space W10

Greg Eason makes a welcome return to London in a two-person exhibition alongside the Bristol-based Anouk Mercier this week entitled CLASSIC/ LUXURY / EXOTIC / ROMANCE (C/L/E/R) at Space W10. For those not familiar with Eason’s graphite drawings, his meticulously detailed and characteristically sparse work isolates narrative fragments within a microscopic frame. Objects become rendered as intricate miniature components within a vast negative space, creating an uneasy sense of depth and scale. Objects are presented as symbols; often incorporating recurring motifs within his work. This exhibition sees him venture into the realms of colour, but […]

Openings: Anthony Lister – “Hurt People Hurt People” @ Lazarides Rathbone

Despite being recently arrested and charged for graffiti in his home city of Brisbane, Australian artist Anthony Lister made it through to the UK for his new solo show entitled Hurt People Hurt People at Lazarides Rathbone in London. He also managed to paint three murals on the streets in the capital city. The exhibition features colourful canvases highlighting contemporary issues, from seductive female figures in superhero outfits to soldiers and still life paintings. It is also the opportunity to view a series of bronze sculptures. Check out pictures from […]
