Openings: Beyond Eden 2015

Just this past weekend, the fifth and final edition of Beyond Eden was held at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. The bulk of the artworks exhibited was seen at booths from C.A.V.E. Gallery (Venice, CA), Copro Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Spoke Art (San Francisco, CA), Hashimoto Contempoary (San Francisco, CA) and event organizers Thinkspace (Culver City, CA). Also, both Mear One (interviewed) and Meggs had solo showcases hosted by the event and there was live painting from Steven Lopez, Gustavo Rimada, John Park and Joseph Lee on Saturday night. This weekend (October 3-4), the fifth and final edition of Beyond Eden will once again be hosted by the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. Previews: Matt Dangler – “Sanctify” @ Copro Gallery

On October 10th, Matt Dangler (interviewed) will be opening a new solo at Copro Gallery, the site of his showing in Los Angeles in 2012 (covered). Entitled Sanctify, the title is perhaps a hint at some of the heavier topics that the gifted painter will be exploring with his surreal vision. Upcoming / Videos: Mel Kadel – “Sky’s Eyes” @ Slow Culture

On October 2nd, Slow Culture in Los Angeles will be presenting new works from Mel Kadel in a show entitled Sky’s Eyes. Known for her folk art inspired paintings featuring her recognizable female characters along with what must be penchant for patterns, the American artist has prepared at least 100 new pieces, which you can see stacked up in the video below. Opening alongside The Gilded Age, Thinkspace brings us Karla Ortiz’s Omens in the gallery’s Project Room. The San Francisco illustrator has delivered several new graphite drawings, each a miniature view into the life of their subject. With a hint of shamanism, the renders provide plenty of mystery and wonder, despite their size. Omens will be on view until October 3rd.

Last week, Los Angeles graffiti legend RISK finished a mural (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. The new piece featuring his “Beautifully Destroyed” aesthetic is part of the OUTSIDEIN, an indoor and outdoor exhibition that will focus graffiti-based mural painting that will eventually grow to include work from Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, and Jeff Soto. Openings: Aaron Horkey & Esao Andrews & João Ruas – “The Gilded Age” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Over the weekend, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles opened the doors to The Gilded Age featuring new works by Aaron Horkey, Esao Andrews, and João Ruas. Co-curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace and Horkey himself, the duo set out to put together a “dream-team” exhibition, giving it a title that harkened back to the late 19th century and the industrial revolution. Streets: Anthony Lister (Los Angeles)

Hitting the streets of Los Angeles once again, Anthony Lister (filmed) spent time getting up all over town the last couple weeks leading up to his current show at New Image Art. Showing his versatility with the roller and spraycans, working day and night, the Australian vandal left one of his signature ballerinas at Superchief Gallery as well as his take on police brutality (seen above). Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Still Life” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, a solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Still Life. Aptly named, the exhibition featured mostly the American artist’s satirical and clever use of human forms as his form of art. Mirroring his street works, viewers can often time be taken unawares when thinking that his installations are actual people. Haroshi For HUF (Los Angeles)

A couple weeks back, we finally had time to stop by HUF on Fairfax in Los Angeles to check out Haroshi’s larger than life middle finger. The irreverent sculpt is something the Japanese artist know for his pieces created from compressed used skateboards, but this time also there are limited edition vinyl versions of the middle finger for sale as well.
