Streets: Cyrcle. x Woodkid (Los Angeles)

The always productive Cyrcle. crew has blessed Los Angeles with another epic mural. This time, on a wall provided by Branded Arts, the boys collaborated with Woodkid on a piece that is located on the hotbed art gallery Hollywood intersection of Santa Monica Blvd and Highland. Although it features the visual artists working with a musician, rather than being a marketing piece for a new album release or a advertisement, the work explores the aesthetic and concept of his music. It rewards followers and fans […]

Previews: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Fans in the Los Angeles area who missed Gary Baseman (interviewed) and his monumental show (covered) at the Skirball Cultural Center earlier this year now have a chance to redeem themselves. Tonight (October 5th) in Venice, California, Baseman will be opening another solo show at the Shulamit Gallery entitled Mythical Homeland. The new body of work continues to explore the ideas of family heritage as well as the notion of home and will include twenty new drawings, paintings, and photographs hung in a birch forest installation. This directly references the […]

Previews: Seth Armstrong – “Lovin’ Thy Neighbor” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Tomorrow night (October 5th), the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting new works from Seth Armstrong in their project room. The concept behind this body of work is an interesting one – each of the smaller works below is a blowup of the smaller scenes seen in the big painting above. Lovin’ Thy Neighbor highlights the cinematic and theatrical feel to Armstrong’s paintings as what is going on behind the windows of the high rise building is fleshed out and expanded upon in the accompanying works. Also seen […]

Openings: Amy Sol – “Incantation” @ CHG Circa

Last month, AM stopped by the opening of Amy Sol’s (interviewed) solo show at CHG Circa entitled Incantation. As the name of the exhibition suggestions, many of the new paintings were thematically tied to the idea of magic. On display were large and small pieces as well as a painting that looked to be a self-portrait. Take a look at more photos below and/or stop by yourself. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Openings: Tim Biskup – “Charge” @ Martha Otero Gallery

Over the weekend, Tim Biskup (featured) opened a solo show at the Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Charge. The new body of work showed the locally based artist’s versatility with works of all sizes including one of his largest paintings to date as well as an interactive piece that first was seen at the FYF Fest where fans were encouraged to pose in cutout holes and then upload the photos to Instagram under the tag #headinthehole. The imagery seen featured a mix of his abstract work as well […]

Streets: Kenny Scharf (Los Angeles) – Part II

Last month, we shared with you photos of a mural that Kenny Scharf (interviewed) painted in Los Angeles on the Davis Brothers’ Tire Pros building in Culver City. Recently, the New York street legend revisited the location and blessed the north wall of the structure with more of his signature imagery. As you can see in the photos above of the project (arranged by Branded Arts), he also posed one of the cars in front that he has been painting for his fans bi-coastally in an ongoing project. Openings: L’Atlas & Canto – “PARALLELS” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. We were particularly impressed with the additional three-dimensional elements of Canto’s work and […]

Previews: Miss Van & Ciro Schu – “Room For Cream” & “Makumbia” @ Soze Gallery & Time to Shine Gallery

Legendary Barcelona-based artist Miss Van and Brazilian artist Ciro Schu have spent most of the summer traveling all over the globe creating both indoor and public art together. Although their styles don’t seem similar at first glance, Miss Van’s dreamy female portraits go very well with Ciro Schu’s abstract imagery and cubist shapes, and there are many murals from Brazil to USA to the UK that prove this point. The blend of their styles will result in side-by-side solo shows opening in Los Angeles on the 21st of September. Miss Van’s […]

Upcoming: Tim Biskup – “Charge” @ Martha Otero Gallery

On September 28th, the Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting a new solo show from Tim Biskup (featured) entitled Charge. The new body of work will revolve around Biskup’s thoughts on the title of the show, which holds complex personal references for him. Not only does the more common meaning to feel psychologically or emotively “charged” describe his feelings behind the exhibition, but “charge” also is used in particle physics and can be applied to color theory. For those in the area, the opening starts at […]

Opening: Nicola Verlato & Caleb Brown – “Pagan Pop” & “A Modern World” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

A couple weekends ago, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery hosted new work from Nicola Verlato (featured) & Caleb Brown entitled Pagan Pop & A Modern World collectively. Featuring two surreal paintings styles that pair nicely together, the exhibition allowed fans to look into the imaginative minds of these two artists. On one side of the gallery, Verlato (seen above) created suspended human forms placed in beautifully rendered fantastical situations seen through the lens of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. Not to be outdone, Brown painted his versions of […]
