Last Saturday, AM attended Copro Gallery for the anniversary of one of our favorite magazines – Hi-Fructose. Known for bringing some of the best pop surrealist art coverage for the past 5 years, Hi-Fructose curated a diverse and top notch mix of some of the best talent in the industry. Last weekend, the Last Rites Gallery hosted artists Chris Peters’ (previewed) and David R. Choquette‘s newest bodies of work. Both artists were in attendance and focused on subject matter consistent with what we have come to expect from the gallery – Peters with his signature skeletal forms and Choquette with his celebration of the grotesque. Shawn Barber, whom we visited with during his show in SF, will be opening his newest show, “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” at Joshua Liner Gallery near the end of next month. The latest in a series of shows built around tattooed portraits of his friends (like one of Thomas Woodruff above) and associated paraphernalia will open on April 24th in New York. Releases: Jeremy Fish – “As the Mind Wanders” Print

To celebrate the first leg of his “Road Less Traveled” touring print and art show, Jeremy Fish (featured) will be releasing a brand new, 21 color screenprint tomorrow, March 13th, at noon CST. The print will release in conjunction with his opening show at OK Mountain Gallery in Austin Texas. Look for Jeremy to venture up to Andenken Gallery in Denver after, with stops planned in Germany, Oregon and Washington state throughout the summer. March came in with a bang last weekend and doesn’t let up as we head in the 2nd weekend of the month. Leading the charge are two gargantuan group shows. First up is the big “5 Year Anniversary Exhibit” from Hi-Fructose in Santa Monica, CA at Copro Gallery and the other is “Lush Life 2” up in Seattle, WA at Roq La Rue Gallery. During our recent trip to Basel Week Miami, our friends at Thinkspace introduced us to an artist named Tran Nguyen. From the moment we saw her work, we were hooked. Lucky for us that she has a show just around the corner as her latest body of work “Nurturing The Uneased Soul” will be opening at Thinkspace Gallery this Friday (3/12). Teaser: “Playboy Redux” @ the Warhol Museum

The 50th Anniversary of the first Playboy Club opening in in 1960 will be celebrated in style at the Warhol Museum at the end of this month. Artists including Gary Baseman (featured), Tim Biskup, Shag (interviewed), Frank Kozik, Andrew Schoultz, SEEN, and of course Tara McPherson have been asked to reinterpret the iconic Playboy Bunny for the exhibition. The show will open on March 27th with a special pajama party and then to the general public starting March 28th. Discuss this show here.
