Streets: Shepard Fairey – Nelson Mandela @ South Africa

Shepard Fairey (featured) took his talents on a global tour this year with stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philly, New York, Berlin, Tokyo and South Africa, to name a few. One of his more notable stops was in South Africa, which has long been a focal point of political dissent. Given this situation, it’s fitting that Mr. Fairey paid his first-ever visit to Johannesburg to build an eight story mural of their recently passed icon Nelson Mandela. Mandela was a key anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served […]

Giveaways: TrustoCorp x OBEY Cereal (Los Angeles)

Our friends at TrustoCorp are back to their old tricks again. Known for their street interventions and “reverse shoplifting” (here & here), the collective is once again visiting stores and placing their products into the natural shopping environment. But, this time they’ve enlisted some help from some other artists. First up is a collaboration with Shepard Fairey where the new flavor of Trusto Cereal is the “OBEY” flavor – which combines their own signature tongue-and-cheek artwork with Shep’s classic Andre The Giant imagery. Expect little touches […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “An Exhibition of Fine Art Prints” @ The Independent

Longtime supporters of Shepard Fairey’s work, ToyRoom Gallery and Outer Edge Studio, hosted his latest show, An Exhibition of Fine Art Prints this past weekend at the Independent in Sand City, CA. The show features an array of works direct from the Obey Giant archives, such as screens on metal, large format prints, a hand painted multiple, a couple of stencil collages. Check out photos of Friday evening’s preview night reception after the jump…

Streets: SABER and Shepard Fairey Flags Collaboration

On LA’s famous Melrose Ave, near Fairfax Ave lies a collaboration by two of the city’s most pioneering street and graffiti artists. On a wall that previously held a Shepard Fairey mural now features two flags side-by-side, one an American flag as interpreted by Fairey and the other, an American flag as seen through the eyes of SABER. Street pieces do not get better than this. These two local heroes have provided the streets of Los Angeles and the rest of the world with innovative, […]

Openings: StolenSpace Summer Group Show

AM got to the opening of StolenSpace’s annual Summer Group Show last week to find a line of people queuing out of the door! A packed house came out to see what we found to be a very strong grouping of work from an interesting mix of artists, some old StolenSpace favorites, but a lot fresh names – some new to the gallery, and some new to the London scene. Chloe Early is one of our favorite painters from the StolenSpace roster, and her new […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey x Obey – Mural Call Out

You’ve seen the previews of Shepard Fairey’s coming May Day exhibition at Deitch, but do you know the drill? Shep has an exhibition and the host city gets a free urban beautification makeover courtesy of iconic murals from the Obey crew, much like the ones built in Boston, Venice, Austin, Pittsburgh, and DC. But, this time he’s doing a little homework and this is your chance to get in on some “audience participation.” The crew is putting a call out for mural sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn […]

Video: Shepard Fairey installation at SXSW Festival

Following up on our Shepard Fairey hits up SXSW coverage, MyLocationScouts posted a nice video of Shepard Fairey and the Obey Giant crew wheatpasting on the side of Home Slice Pizza in Austin. It’s always nice to see Shep’s artistry in action, showing off his composition, layering, and tearing skills. Via Hypebeast.

Google Maps United Kingdom “Street Art” View

One of the most important elements of a strong street art piece is proper placement, which dictates how the work engages viewers through its interaction with the space it inhabits. This context is usually lost when viewing street art online as most photographers are more focused on filling the frame with the work itself. Google Maps changes this, having just added street view imagery throughout the United Kingdom. Street art fans have already been scouring the city, identifying the locations of pieces from Banksy, Blu, […]

It’s A New Day – will.i.am

A new celebration video for Obama came out recently by will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas.  What’s interesting is that alot of the street art and iconic images from his campaign were incorporated from artists such as Shepard Fairey, Ron English, and even Josh Keyes (not sure why?).  Also stopped by Subliminal Projects last night to see the “Letters and Ligatures” show and chatted a little with Shepard Fairey and he told us that some of the video was filmed on the roof and around […]

Preview: D*Face + Obey @ Magda Danysz

This weekend, two of street art’s best, Shepard Fairey and D*Face, invade La Ville-Lumiere (that’s Paris) for a show at the lovely Galerie Magda Danysz. Looks like Mr. Obey will be showing mostly larger HPMs and album covers, giving European collectors a crack at some images from his recent, instantly sold-out San Fran show; D*Face will show some mixed media works and prints. If you are in Paris, check out the vernissage on Saturday, or peruse the show at your leisure sometime before October 25. […]
