Openings: “Wreck The Walls” @ Subliminal Projects

Subliminal Projects played host to an intriguing collection of original work from artists who have been known to bend rules and break molds in their respective fields. Featuring artwork by Ryan McGinness, Blek Le Rat, David Ellis, Erik Foss, Eric White, Evan Hecox, John Van Hamersveld, Greg Lamarche, Jason Alper, Martha Cooper, Retna, Skullphone, SWOON, Tim Biskup and many more, Wreck the Walls (previewed) served as a merging of artistic niches rarely exhibited together under one roof. It’s always nice to see multiple artistic movements, […]

Graciously staying open and providing an art viewing opportunity for the LA area during the holiday season, Subliminal Projects will unveil Wreck the Walls this Saturday, December 11. The group exhibition of over 30 “rebelious pioneers” will include work from Blek Le Rat, David Ellis, Erik Foss, Eric White, Evan Hecox, Greg Lamarche, Jason Alper, Martha Cooper, Retna, Skullphone, SWOON and Tim Biskup. An assortment of well established contemporary artists combined with a dash of street art and pop-surrealism should provide for a diverse collection […]

Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 Overview (Part II)

With more murals than you can count at this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, here is part two (see part one here) of our overview starting with the classic combination of Mac & Retna (who also had a solo show at Primary Projects). Take a look at the results of other artists’ hard work after the jump including Os Gemeos, Ekundayo, Chris Stain, Aiko, Roa, and more…

Basel Week Miami ’10: Retna – “Silver Lining” @ Primary Projects

Last night, before heading out to the requisite evening parties at Art Basel, we stopped by Primary Projects to check out the street calligraphic stylings of Retna (featured). His signature script in different manifestations infused the space with the West Coast aesthetic including the walls, floors, and doors reminiscent of his immersive show at Riviera and Riviera in August (covered). The impressive new body of work included large pieces on panels, found objects, and overwritten photographs. Fellow fans and notables in the street scene like […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10: Retna – “Silver Lining” @ Primary Projects

As we mentioned in our studio visit feature a couple weeks ago, Retna will be showing at this year’s Art Basel Week. The show entitled Silver Lining (opening Dec. 2nd) will be a completely new body of work including paintings, drawings, and an installation, but check out this huge painting that should leave no doubt that the prominent AWR/MSK member will be bringing the heat to Miami. Primary Projects 4141 NE 2nd Ave. Suite 104 Miami, FL 33127 A closer look after the jump…

Streets: Downtown LA Graffiti Mural Mini Tour

This past weekend, AM (along with our good friend Jasper Wong) was lucky enough to go on a mini tour of the murals in downtown Los Angeles, hosted by one of LA’s finest photographers – Estevan Oriol (after he gave us a tour of his spectacular studio that he shares with Mister Cartoon…more on that later). The piece that you see above is by Mister Cartoon and Toomer.  It is one of LA’s most famous murals and has been the background for countless photographs and […]

Studio Visits: Retna

AM rarely experiences the sensation of studio envy, but the pang certainly hit us upon arriving at Retna‘s abode and work space. It was pretty much a “Holy Guacamole!” moment. And we don’t even like Robin. The studio in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles apparently measures some 3,500 square feet. We immediately knew it would be perfect for the AM team training sessions in preparation for the international synchronised hula hooping championships. Unfortunately, Retna wasn’t very keen on the idea of subletting to […]

“WALLWORKS” @ The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

In a project reminiscent of the old parking structure at the LACMA (now demolished), the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has commissioned several artists to christen each level of their parking garage with their signature imagery. The new hotel, which you may recognize from their recent commercial with “Just the Right Amount of Wrong”, now has permanent murals, entitled widely as “WALLWORKS”, from Kenny Scharf, Retna, Shepard Fairey, and Shinique Smith. We have not even told you about the inside of the hotel as it sounds […]

They were just released moments ago and normally retail for $1,800. However, just for you loyal Arrested Motion readers, Rivera and […]

Retna x Prism Gallery

It must be nice to have connections. Prism, a spacious gallery built directly on the sunset strip and also an architectural marvel, recently had it’s windows blessed by the street calligraphy of Retna. Hopefully, the work will still be up for the opening on Friday night of the “Misericordia” group show we previewed for you the other day. So, those how missed out on Retna’s immersive solo show at Rivera & Rivera (covered) should definitely check this one out. More images after the jump…
