Streets: Mark Jenkins // Lodz Murals (Poland)

Recently in Poland, Mark Jenkins (interviewed) was invited in to create a series of seven installations for a public arts project curated by Michał Bieżyński – Lodz Murals. Working along Piotrkowska street, the American artist stationed a few pieces at ground level and left some that passersby had to look up to see. As per his usual practice, the works were riffs on the human form and their effectiveness hinged on the element of surprise and clever placement. Photo credit: Rafaà Tomczyk. Later this month, Ai Weiwei will be opening an ambitious project in New York where he will be creating site specific works as well as a series of 200 banners that will be placed on lampposts in all five boroughs. Rules of Engagement, a joint show from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) and Rero, is currently on view at Wunderkammern and will run until October 28th. The exhibition at the gallery’s Milan venue features the American Jenkins bringing his signature and often ski-masked sculptural pieces in from the streets while still retaining the cleverness and grittiness in the indoor setting. The official opening of the Urban Nation Museum this weekend in Berlin turned the entire area into an open-air art gallery with an extensive program that included performances, workshops, show acts and more. For this event, the organizers managed to shut a section of the bustling Bülowstrasse and turn it into an art venue called Art Mile. Jay Z Performs With Jeff Koons Balloon Dog @ V Festival

A couple nights ago, Jay Z took to the stage at Virgin V Festival in Chelmsford with a 40 foot inflated Jeff Koons balloon dogg with the blessing of the artist. The rapper is a self-proclaimed admirer of the British sculptor and even included a line – “Oh what a feeling, fuck it I want a billion / Jeff Koons balloons, I just wanna blow up” on his 2013 song Picasso Baby.
