Previews: “Conjoined 666” @ Copro Gallery

Tonight (January 16th) in Los Angeles, another Conjoined show opens (see 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011) at Copro Gallery with this one dubbed “666” for good measure. Curated by Chet Zar as usual, the sculptural group exhibition features “classic sculptures, hyperreal life like models, surreal assemblages, mixed media paintings, and other conjoined works.” Fans of the dark arts should stop by tonight and bring $6 for the entry fee. Previews: Nick Walker @ Quin Arts

On January 21st (6-9pm), Nick Walker (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at the Quin Hotel in New York. As the hotel’s inaugural artist-in-residence, the British artist already has 15 original pieces for display in their permanent collection. The newest body of work will be sure to put his stencil skills on display as well as bring us along some further adventures with his iconic Vandal. Discuss Nick Walker here.

Coinciding with its thirtieth birthday, Saatchi Gallery in London is opening on the 13th of January an all female show entitled Champagne Life featuring a cast of emerging international artists including Julia Wachtel, Mequitta Ahuja, Virgile Ittah, Marie Angeletti, Julia Dault, Alice Anderson, Jelena Bulajic, Mia Feuer, Sigrid Holmwood, Seung Ah Paik, Maha Malluh, Suzanne McClelland, Stephanie Quayle, and Soheila Sokhanvari. If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. We were unable to attend the reception last Saturday night at Spoke Art, but we met up with the curator/art blogger, Zach Tutor, earlier in the day for a look at all the artwork. Previews: Ai Weiwei – “Er Xi” @ Le Bon Marché

In July 2015, Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei finally got his passport back four years after Chinese authorities seized it preventing him from leaving the country. In recent months, he’s been traveling around Europe, from UK to Greece, where he visited the refugee camp on Lesbos and set up a studio there. Currently he is Paris, working on an upcoming exhibition at Le Bon Marché, an upscale department store. Currently at The Huntington in Los Angeles, a selection of works from Alex Israel has been inserted throughout the the historic institution’s European art collection. The intriguing mix of new and old brings to mind exhibitions in the past like KAWS at the PAFA or like the turns Koons, Murakami, and Kapoor took at Versailles.
