Previews: Seonna Hong – “If You Lived Here I’d Be Home By Now” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

When the doors open tomorrow night (October 17th) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (529 West 20th Street), the new paintings from Seonna Hong (interviewed) will greet visitors from the walls of the Chelsea showspace. It’s been eight years since the the Los Angeles-based artist has shown in New York and in the intervening time, her melancholic and somber pieces have moved in a more hopeful direction. The familiar scrapes and swirls that define the abstract background for her girls and animals remain, but this time she has tried something new as well by […]

Previews: Mr Jago – “NIL” @ Unit London

After numerous exhibitions around the world, Mr Jago is about to present NIL at Unit London on October 22nd, his first with the gallery. For this show, the Bristol-based artist created a whole new body of work using oil for the first time, along with acrylic and spray paint. His explosive new works are a result of years of evolving artistically from the droid-like figures all the way to abstract takes on traditional landscape painting. In general, the paintings are a balance between chaos and harmony, hope and despair, with Jago […]

Openings: Stella Im Hultberg – “Stranger” @ Spoke Art

At the beginning of the month, Spoke Art in San Francisco introduced new works from Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) in her first solo in four years. Entitled Stranger, the very floral new body of work encompassed many different mediums including oil paintings, loosely rendered watercolor, india ink sketches, as well as sculpture. The fresh imagery is inspired by the changes in her life, with being a new parent being the most obvious. She further explains – “There was a lot of ‘heaviness of love’ that I felt since becoming a parent, […]

Openings: EGO & Grady Gordon – “The Time is Never” & “Been Seeing You Around Lately” @ Flatcolor Gallery

Befitting the month known for ghouls and ghosts, Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle welcomed in EGO and Grady Gordon to exhibit new works earlier this month. EGO’s The Time Is Never features characters with enough charming personality to overcome their stereotypical spookiness. Symbology used in several pieces, along with star fields, lends an alien or sci-fi mix to the show. Just up the stairs, Grady Gordon’s prints in Been Seeing You Around Lately offer a look into a mythological world governed by shadows. The less-than-conventional method of […]

Streets: Luke Chueh / Murals In The Market (Detroit)

Last month, as part of the Murals In the Market festival, Luke Chueh (interviewed) painted a rare public arts mural in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The Los Angeles-based painter decided to go with an image inspired by his thoughts of the Motor City as being the home of house music and DJ culture as we know it. For fans of Chueh’s sad bear series of works, The Soundtrack (To My Life) is certainly instantly recognizable and striking in large scale form. Featured artists also include: 2501, Askew, Beau Stanton, Brian Lacey, Denial, Ellen […]

Previews: Laura Ball – “Keep” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery will be presenting new works from Laura Ball starting this Friday, October 16th. The new watercolors are collectively entitled Keep, a continuation of her exploration of the subconscious and the hero myth of Joseph Campbell. In San Diego-based artist’s mind, the amalgamations of creatures, bones, and flora form sanctuaries in her paintings where the endangered animals can find refuge in a rapidly declining world. Discuss this show here. Discuss Laura Ball here.

Previews: Know Hope – “Empathy” @ Catinca Tabacaru Gallery

On Friday, October 16 (6-8pm), Catinca Tabacaru Gallery in New York will be opening the first solo exhibition with the gallery by Know Hope aka Addam Yekutieli. Empathy will be featuring the works by the Israeli artist from his ongoing project previously seen in Tel Aviv (covered). The newest series by the street artist and poet includes a number of text-based photographic diptychs. They show site-specific outdoor textual pieces along with images of people bearing hand poked tattoos of the works, essentially creating parallels between political situations and emotional conditions. The idea of this project is to […]

Upcoming: Brian Viveros – “Matador” @ Thinkspace Gallery

On November 7th, the latest solo from Brian Viveros (featured) will be opening at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Matador, the exhibition will not only include new oil paintings, drawings, exclusive edition prints but also a large collaborative sculpt with Pretty In Plastic entitled Bullheaded and the release of his first ever art book published by the gallery called The DirtyLand. We recently had the opportunity to visit Viveros at his Riverside studio and were quite impressed with the increasingly intricate detailing and evolution of his imagery that has taken his work to […]

Previews: Bom.K – “L’imprévisible Imaginaire” @ Moniker Art Fair 2015

This year’s Moniker Art Fair 2015 in London will be hosting the premiere UK solo exhibition of Bom.K, organized by MYA gallery. L’imprévisible Imaginaire will include the newest paintings by one of the founding members of the DMV crew. The French artist, who developed a very recognizable style through his outdoor works, has been producing studio works for the last decade. Focusing on the darker side of urban reality, madness, life in the peripheral suburbs, social exclusion, fear and hate, his work is like the unwanted voice of his generation. […]

Streets: JR / Nuit Blanche (Toronto)

Earlier this month, this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche opened up to the public in Toronto. One of the participating artists this year is French photogapher JR (interviewed) with several projects to engage his fans in Canada. One of these is seen above, the continuation of the TED winner’s Inside Out project where people are asked to have their photos taken in large scale black & white format at a mobile photo booth and then pasted as public art or for some political motive in certain instances. In this case, the […]
